I was shopping around for an air rifle to use at our club's indoor range. Noticed the local Cdn Tire had the Ruger Blackhawk on sale for $176. Did a little googling around and found a BC supplier selling them for $99. Took the ad to Cdn Tire and they price matched even though it was an online retailer. They usually only price match for brick & mortar stores. Manager told me they were going on liquidation on Monday (Mar 3rd.) for $99 anyways. Good deal on a break action rifle I think.

Now all I have to do is find some lead free pellets (locally).
 
I bought the non-restricted 1000 fps version. It has been a good rifle for casual target shooting and plinking.

It requires quite a bit of strength to ####. The 12 year old that I was teaching with it had problems with it. An adult man will have no problem.

Mine likes Crosman Destroyers. It should have a heavier pellet rather than a light pellet but my choice of ammo is kind of limited.

I picked up some Crosman Powershot Penetrators @8.5gr and some Stoeger X-Speed @ 5.56gr so we'll see which it likes better. At least now I can use it on our indoor range.
 
If you have the <500 fps model I think those light pellets are OK. If you have the high velocity model, I'd stick with the heavier pellets just for the sake of your springers innards.
 
Some of the lead free pellet are made of steel and are very hard on the rifling. They will wear it out much faster than lead.

Also x2 on heavier pellets in a springer. There is not enough resistance for the piston with lighter pellets. Similar effect to dry firing.

Made it to the indoor range today for the first time. Finally. :) Wasn't all that sure where this thing would shoot, haven't had a chance to dial it in yet and the results were so so.

The scope that came the gun seems pretty poor compared to others I have or have had. I think the mounting rings are crap and the scope was moving around a lot with the recoil from the rifle. I'll investigate getting a better set of rings maybe. I took a screwdriver with me to make sure everything was tight and it was. The Stoeger X-Speed 5.56 gr seemed to be the most consistent. The Crosman SSP 4.0gr. were flyers, all over the place. Probably way to light for this rifle even though it's only the 490 FPS model. The Powershot Penetrators always seemed to fly low and to the right likely due to their weight 8.5gr.

A little more tweaking and should be fun. Lot more fun than standing on the outdoor range this time of year freezing your gronicles off just to punch some holes in a paper target! :)
 
Remember that the way you hold a springer air rifle has a tremendous effect on the grouping. A relaxed and consistent grip is best, but resting it on any kind of a hard surface is death to any kind of a group.

Yesterday's foray into the indoor range was a little better. I think I and the gun settled down a bit.

First grouping before adjusting the scope, which I retightened with some locktite on the screws.

I stuck with the Stoeger X-Speed pellets (5.56 gr). Groupings got a little better. Distance was 17.5 yds.

Pretty happy with that. Some more practice and I hope to get the groups tighter.

All in all I'd say a pretty good unit for $99. Hoping the weather warms up a little so I can get back to my Smith & Wesson M&P 22 which is actually cheaper to shoot than the air rifle! Go figure! :)
 
I think any RWS/Diana 34 mainspring or tuning kit will fit the Ruger/Chi-com guns.As well an internal tube polish and cocking slots then lube.Won't hurt to check the piston seal either..........Harold

Today went to the indoor range with my buddy Fred. Now Fred's an ole' cowboy type from the prairies and grew up on a farm there. He's likely shot more ammo in his life than our whole Cdn military! :) Just kidding. He's a Cowboy action shooter, avid bird hunter, firearm safety instructor and the list goes on. We worked together in Coast Guard way back when. Anywho, I was schooled again today.

His results. He threw 10 pellets at this target. Some through the same holes! :)

Still I guess it takes time to build up that muscle memory. You only get better if you shoot more. Friday looks like it's going to be a decent day for some outdoor fun. Fred's bringing his cowboy pistols (single action .45 revolvers) so really looking forward to that!

hmm, my boy managed to bust the trigger guard. It was pretty cold out so what can you do. I didn't notice it was all one piece though until it was in pieces.
Any suggestions? I'm thinking cut it off and screw/glue in something metal or try some epoxy art to rebuild it.

I do epoxy art all the time! I'm building a boat. There's not much that some epoxy & fiberglass can't fix. If you've got something to use as a mould even better.

It was a lil' too cold to play outside today so back into the indoor range I went. Results were pretty good. I moved the shooters box all the way back to 25 yds.
