Looking at the Ruger website, It looks like 5.5" is the nicest looking length. Anybody having shot a few want to comment on handling.

I have an super Blackhawk w/ 5'5 barrel in 44mag' it kicks hard. I like the finish (stainless), feels good (heavy), only problem for me is the grip, I have big hands, my pinky is swinging in the air because the handle is small and curved, with the 44mag recoil, it is hard on the wrist, but overall it is a nice gun for the price. Go to a gun store and hold one, then you will know what I am talking about. However, the Bisley grip version and the Redhawk version will provide you with a more comfortable grip.

Yeah looking at Redhawks too. I wish they made a 4.2" SRH and called it the Yukon. The Alaskan 2.5" looks awesome. I like the 454 option. I guess I like the look of the Blackhawk better and have never shot a 'cowboy' gun. Unfortunatly my local store only has about 5 pistols max at any time. I keep looking at them all when something new shows up.

For the actual Blackhawk model, my favorite barrel length is the 4 5/8".

With a fixed sight model Ruger like the old model Vaquero, I prefer the looks of the 5 1/2"

For a bit of a comparison, the top two on the right.

I prefer the balance of the 4 5/8" myself. With hot loads though, the 10 1/2" Super Blackhawk is easier on the hand.

A trip into Edmonton might be a good excuse to fondle some different models and see what feels good. If you were a little more central, I'd let you have a test drive with a 7 1/2" SBH.

I have a 4 5/8 super blackhawk and she is a blast to shoot. Bit hard on the hand after 50 rounds but fun regardless. Beautiful looking single action stainless piece. Heavy in the hand and hits like a freight train.
