Ruger Blackhawk issue

I have a Ruger blackhawk 45 caliber I received from an estate, that’s having an issue firing.

When you #### the gun, and press the trigger, nothing happens. But if you pull the hammer back (while already cocked) you can manually decock it. Besides that, gun looks new, indexes fine etc. Occasionally (maybe 1/20th of the time) it will fire.

Suggestions?

Sounds like a buggered "trigger job". Find some one near you who knows Rugers, or send it back to the factory. - dan

Take the grips off & look inside. Check the hammer strut to see if it is still aligned. Check the hammer plunger, spring & retaining pin for alignment or breakage. Check the hammer pivot screw to see if it has been tampered with.

Find a smith familiar with Ruger single actions... no sense in you trying to fix a serious problem with the trigger...

This is where I'd start.

Maybe someone can post pics of a similar Blackhawk and you can compare what you're looking at to at least get an understanding of what is going on. The problem could be very obvious.
 
Check the position of the base pin. Funky stuff can happen to the hammer if the cylinder pin is out of position. Also check that the plunger on the tip of the base pin moves freely and isn't gunked up and stuck in position. It applies pressure to the transfer bar, if your gun is made like mine.

OP,
as per PM-

If you #### the hammer(unloaded of course) is there a flat bar that slides upwards as you squeeze the trigger(while holding/thumbing the hammer)?
(the base pin/cylinder pin may be an issue as mentioned in above post)

If,equipped w/ the flat/transfer bar,does it by chance want to bind up under the firing pin?

With revolver unloaded & hammer down in fired position,do you have any difficulties opening the loading/ejection GATE?

If none of the above applies-

As mentioned previously...someone hacked a trigger job on said pistol.
