Hey folks, I love my six-shooters and also am the proud owner of a Ruger Blackhawk convertible. Live the machine, hate the sights. Does anyone know of an aftermarket sight set that will provide me a lower sight profile, particularly that front blade - makes a mess of leather holsters.

I think your best bet is to take the sharp edges off the sight that are snagging and or change the way you draw and holster the gun so you aren't dragging the sight as much.
Are you competing with it?

You can round or angle the front partridge blade to avoid digging up the leather but the height is fixed by the use of the taller adjustable rear sight. The rear can have the insert blade trimmed by a LITTLE and then trim the front to match but we're only talking about .025 to .035 before you run out of room.

If you're doing a lot of holster draw shooting then the real answer is to sell the Convertible and buy a fixed sight gun. The fixed sight models have the rear notch down in the frame and the front blade is correspondingly shorter. Also these models have the rounded blade.

If you're not drawing at speed then simply alter your draw so it lifts more from the butt end and the barrel rides the rear seam of the holster until it's clear. That way the sight won't dig in. But for speed drawing you simply have the wrong gun. You really need a fixed sight gun with the rounded front sight for that style of shooting.

It would appear your using a commercially made holster that doesn't have a sight channel formed into it. A properly formed holster will be wet formed to allow clearance about half way down, on a revolver holster, to accommodate the front site. You may be able to case the holster, depending on the weight of the leather. Add a dowel the height of the front sight tapering back to the height at the front of the frame, tape it in place, wrap the revolver in saran wrap and fit the gun back in the holster, finger press the shape in, and let it dry which will form a sight channel, and over all tighten the holster up again with a nice fit. Holster makers use blue guns to plan out a new designs and then just stamp them out over and over. On revolver holsters they do minimal fitting if any.
