Hello , Does anyone know the differences between the Ruger Blackhawks and the Super Blackhawks? I know the Supers are just in . 44 Magnum and Blackhawks are in all the other calibers but are there frame differences as well ? Can I buy a barrel and cylinder and convert one to the other? Say a Super to .30 Carbine or a Bisley to . 44 Magnum? thanks in advance.

My thought was to change calibers and barrel lengths of an existing gun . as opposed to buying different guns, a concept similar to a Thompson/ Center in a revolver.

The grip frame of the SBH is longer than that of the Blackhawk, and IIRR from when I was ordering grips for my SBH, there were differences in the SBH grip frame sizes during certain manufacturing years, to say nothing of the frame materials used including brass, stainless, and carbon steel, and shaped with both round and dragoon style trigger guards. There are references to XR3 RED and XR3 grip frames, but my understanding is that any of the large grip frames can be fitted to the large frame Blackhawks (.30 carbine, .41 magnum, .44 magnum, .45 Colt) SBHs, or old model Vaqueros.

revolver barrels are screwed in and FITTED to the frame-thats HOW THEY GET HEADSPACE- i assume you'll also be wanting to go back and forth, not just a one-time conversion- the DAN WESSON is the only one i know of that allows this, and then it's barrel length only- the cylinder stays in the frame- with the ruger convertables, you change out the cylinder, but the barrel is the same- that's why you can do do 38/357/9mm with just a simple cylinder change- 355(9mm) is not that far off 357- however, ruger mates BOTH cylinders to the GUN before shipping- THEY advise you may run into TIMING issues unless you return the gun to them if you wish to buy the 9mm cylinder-

I don't think Ruger will even sell the cylinders. I think I went through this exercise a while ago to look at converting a 44 Mag to 44/40 (don't ask !!) and Ruger would only do the change if you sent the revolver to their factory. Not really worth the hassle. If you want to switch calibers on the fly, get a pistol that has different top ends available or a T/C Contender.

not THAT unusual- you probably have a rifle in 44/40 and wanted the blackhawk to match- going the other way is pretty common as well- i had the 45colt/acp convertable and found that the acp cylinder stayed in the box most of the time anyway- nice to have , but not very practical

I think that Numrich Arms lists cylinders and barrels for both SBH and BH Rugers, though they are not always in stock, as for the grip frames , I am unable to buy Pachymar rubber grips for a Ruger Bisley, which is what I have, so a change there would expand my options. I'm quite familiar with the Dan Wesson , as I used one in .357 Supermag. for IHMSA a few years ago. A friend of mine had a stainless Ruger .44 SBH with a 10 5/8" bbl. [ the silver hornpipe]. we changed it to a 6 1/2" , set the headspace and timed the front sight, it made it much handier. anyway I'll see what happens to my idea and let you know, Thanks , ribber
