I've been thinking about adding a 357 revolver to my safe these days and have looked at the Smith & Wesson 686 and Ruger GP 100. I think the S & W is a little more than what my budget can afford these days.

I also kind of like the looks of the old style single action revolvers. Any CGN members Ruger Blackhawk owners? Just wondering what your impression i.e. trigger quality, etc. is of this gun.
 
I found the GP 100 a nicer gun to shoot than the BlackHawk. Great trigger pull, feel, weight etc. I was wondering if you may have thought about the ROSSI .357? These gun's are stainless steel, and cost around the $450.00 mark new. Have a look at their web site, you will be impressed! Cheers!

Make sure you handle the Blackhawk first as alot of people find the grip frame too short, if so...the Bisley model is the way to go.
 
I have about six S&W revolvers (models 66, 585, 29, 29, 14) and two Ruger Blackhawks that I use for cowboy action shooting. The S&Ws are nicer guns. The Blackhawks are great guns but they are not as smooth or refined as the S&Ws. They were never meant to be. They are what they are and are a decent gun none the less.

If I only had the choice of one or the other then it would be a S&W hands down. Thankfully I am not limited in that way and can enjoy the Blackhawks for what they are.
 
The Black Hawks (.357/9mm & 45 Colt/ACP convertables) are interesting handguns. Who are the dealers of the Ruger single actions (just in case I catch up witht the fever)? :D :D :D

Are the prices competitive from dealer to dealer?
 
I've got one of the 45Colt/ACPs, and one in 30 carbine. I also have a 629 and a 586. While the BHs are definately not S&Ws, they are still a good, fun gun for the price.

Also, if you find yourself playing with top end loads a lot, the BH are rugged.
 
Had both a stainless and blued Blackhawk in the past. Nice single action wheelguns.

Hold out for a S&W 586/686 or Ruger GP100... you'll be glad you did. Nice to have that double-action option... ;)
 
All my revolvers are Ruger Blackhawk variants. My favorite is the Bisley grip frame. They do not come with as nice a trigger as a Smith but you can get it pretty close without a lot of work.

One "convenience" the Smith and GP100 have over the single action is ease of loading and unloading. If you plan on shooting a fair bit the double action is far quicker/easier to reload. Cowboy action isn't bad stage to stage but a long range session unloading one at a time gets old fairly quickly. Still don't plan on buying a double action any time soon though......
 
There is nothing wrong with a Ruger trigger which cannot be fixed. I agree with the comments concerning the Bisley grip, however, I much prefer the old 3 screw guns. If it was me, I'd try to find one of these, and since I'm seldom (read never) happy with an out of the box gun anyway, so I'd send it out to have the Bisley grip frame fitted. In addition to slicking up the trigger, you could have the forcing cone changed to 11 degrees, a black powder chamfer could be added to the cylinder to reduce holster wear, and a locking base pin could replace the factory one held in place by a spring loaded cross pin.

Hey scott...I have an older Ruger Blackhawk .357 in single action. PM me and maybe we can get togther sometime and I can let you try it out. :)


I do like the feel of it but I'm not a huge revolver fan
