308/180s are the perfect way to go- all the penetration you need- just use a PREMIUM bullet or a sgk- and keep your shots under 250/300-

it will shoot 180 grain bullets about 100-150 fps slower than a 22-24 barreled 308, or around 2450 to 2500 fps at the muzzle.

That is faster than most 303 factory 180 grain ammo goes out of a 24 inch barrel. Most people think that a 303 is adequate for moose.

Another way of looking at it, is that at 200 yards, your 180 grain bullet will be going around 2100 fps. A 180 grain bullet from a 300 Mag will be going around 2100 fps at 400 yards. Most people think a 300 Mag is adequate for moose to over 400 yards.

I never found the 308 to be wanting. It's 100fps slower than a 30-06 which is insignificant. I like 165grn Federal Premium Boattails for deer & moose. 1 gun a light easy to carry short action do it all gun.

You generally get 100 fps per inch of barrel in a 308. I have one which is great for close bush shots on deer. As for Newfoundland moose, use the proper bonded bullet and the proper shot placement, shouldnt be a problem. More moose have been shot in Newfoundland by locals with a 243win and 303's as they are the common firearms on hand. Its all about shot placement. I would say go for it, I think they are a comfortable little rifle, just watch the muzzle. only 16.5"

i have a rem 700 youth model with 150 accubonds it shoots under an inch at a hundred and the last moose it was pointed at only about 10 steps we paced the distance at 286 paces

You do your part and .308 will do it's. I like the Ruger Compact idea for a bush gun. Pics are required and good luck on your hunt.

Cheers, Will

Thats probably a little on the high side. 25-50fps/inch is the figure I've seen floating around most often.

I know a lady that dumped a buffalo near pink mountain with a 308 compact. great little rifle but the trigger is ####e. get an after market.Ruger action is almost to strong , can lead to some dam hot load development.

The 308 will do fine on moose, but I would recommend a longer bbl for better handling and less muzzle blast. 16.5" is too short.

A lightweight 308 with a 20" bbl will be your friend.

I think it would work well for the thick stuff. The little compacts do have some muzzle blast but I dont' see the big deal unless you are trying to watch your hits in your scope. I bought one in .243 to get my wife shooting and even that one has a bit of a blast but that little rifle is great to handle.

Unless you are shooting at a good distance I dont' the think the MV loss is an issue.

Most moose are shot within 100 yards. 308s have plenty of power to bring one down assuming you know where to place the shot. The bull I shot in October was over 500 yards using 165 gr. TSX bullets.

I am not sure about short barrels. IMO a standard 20” is a much better choice.

I have a 77 international, I developed a load with 220 grain Sierra Round noses pushed along with a healthy dose of 4320, very accurate and supprisingly flat shooting. I would be great on Moose.
