Hawkeye African + Hawkeye Compact =

What do you think?

It wouldn't be that hard to make one. Practical? Maybe not. Fun? Definately.

You could just buy the black version of the Alaskan and slap a wood stock on it.;)

You could do that, but you'd still have a .375 or .416 with a 20" barrel.

The one in the pic is the Hawkeye Compact with the 16.5" barrel, that I cut and pasted the sights and barrel band from the African model onto. It would make a really cool miniature express style rifle. Throw a Leupold 2.5 on there, or forget about the express sight and get a NECG peep. I think it would be a lot of fun!

The wood stock looks nice, but my experience with factory wood stocks on powerful rifles has not been positive. Get the stock bedded and cross bolted before you shoot it.

Moose Masher, I agree, the NECG peep sight is very good, and the white front bead that comes on the Alaskan should be swapped for a flat topped post. If scoped with a variable, which makes the rifle more versatile, it should have a low enough power that you can use it effectively when the range is measured in feet.

I wasn't thinking .375, I was just thinking of getting a Compact in 7mm 08 or .308, adding a barrel band swivel stud, NECG Masterpeice banded front ramp and a NECG Ruger peep, to make an express styled compact rifle.

why not just buy the International?

will save you a lot of money on parts and gunsmithing.

I have an International. They sell for abot $1000 these days. Compacts are about $750-$800. A Masterpeice ramp with post is $105, a barrel band swivel stud is $50-$70 from Brownells. A NECG peep is $85. Gunsmithing? Well that depends, but mounting a barrel band and a front sight shouldn't cost an arm and a leg.

You guys are rainin' on my parade! Just agree with me that it would be a really cool little rifle, and we can all move on.:)

Great minds think alike! I'm doing the very thing right now, just waiting to get it back from the smith.

Have a Ruger Frontier in .358 Win, 16 1/2" barrel, laminated stock. Took off the 1/4 rib and getting a NECG Masterpiece banded front sight installed. Also have the rear peep for it. Not doing the barrel band swivel though. Will get the action and barrel Gun Coated in a dark, almost black grey. Should be a short little punchy package, my "short express". Will post pics in the summer when it's all done. Just got to figure a cheap way to fill the holes left by the 1/4 rib.

Cool gun MooseMasher. I especially like the new design of the Hawkeye compact slimmed down foreends. They are far nicer than the older clubby ones which are on all the Frontiers and early compacts too.

Gunslinger - be real interested in seeing that one when finished. It'll have a thicker tube than the "compact" pictured above. That IMO will make it appear more express like with that masterpiece front sight too - although the above is very nice. I have a Frontier 358 too.

BTW CGNer "Wrongway" took off his Frontier's quarter rib too. But I forget how he filled the holes.

Funny my Frontier has the slimmer foreend, I was actually surprised as I was expecting the older club.

I don't want to permanently fill the holes just in case I want to put the 1/4 rib on someday. Thinking some brass rod threaded then peened in place. Won't be noticable once filed and painted, but easy to spot if reinstalling the rib. I dunno, any ideas?
