I seem to have taken a liking to Ruger rifles with sights, which is difficult to explain since I scope everything and can barely use irons these days.

There is one for sale in .300WM but the price is a bit steep.

What were they chambered in? I've seen .30-06 and .300WM locally. What do they seem to go for these days?

RSE's in .25/06, .270, .30/06, .300 WM, .338 WM.
RSM's in .375 H&H, .416, .458 WM, .458 Lott.

Great rifles, the RSM's are heavy and weight forward, the RSE's are lighter with better balance.

The one I am looking for is the Hawkeye compact magnum .308. Most obviously came in .300 and .338 RCM’s but for a while they chambered it in .308. 20” barrel with decent iron sights.

I have a set of M77 Mark II RSL rifles in .30/06 and .358 plus an RS in 7X64 Brenneke... some of my favorite hunting rifles;

The .300WM express rifle sat at my LGS for too long and came home with me last night. Came with a Leupold M8 6x that I'll probably flog in the EE. The temptation was too much for me to handle.

Hoyt your firearms pics are always perfect. Crystal clear resolution.
Do you mind sharing your photo equipment/setup?

The equipment is nothing more than a Samsung S21, however photography is all about controlling light. I have a spot in my dining room below a picture window, where the light comes in diffused early in the morning before the sun is direct, then on the shadow side I turn up the chandelier light and move the dining room table back so that the light Illuminates the "dark side." Cuts down on the dark shadows... the set up is not perfect but good enough to show detail. The angle you hold the camera lens at matters too... try a few different angles until it looks right. After the photo is taken, I sharpen the image a bit and adjust the contrast and color tone to match the reality of what I see, as lighting and surrounding color often change the final image from it's true color.

M8 6x scopes are great light tough reliable scopes!!

They are. I think they're probably the best choice for a vintage mountain rifle, and a strong case can be made for a fixed 6 on a general purpose rifle.

The fact is, I prefer a little more magnification at the range, and a little less in the woods at dusk, so I usually go with a mid power variable.

I'm jealous of Hoyt's RS/RLS Rugers every time he posts them.

I had one briefly in 300wm - beautiful rifle, should have kept it. Wood grade seemed to vary a lot rifle to rifle.
