RUGER GP 100 4.2" Stainless 357 mag price?
My local gun shop says they can order one for me but at a price of $850 + tax. Is that a reasonable price, I have doubts but need to get feedback. Thanks.

They were going for around $700-$750, so considering everything from the States has been going up in price I wouldn't be surprised at that price. I'd be more shocked if you actually can get one in the next 12 months.

If you do order one please keep this thread updated on how long it takes for it to come in.

That's more than a hundred over the last (small) batch that got distributed. How much do you like your local shop? You should easily be able to pre-order it with some other store, including site sponsors, at a lower price. They are severely back-ordered, so expect to commit a deposit if you're serious. The wait is in-determinate.

Sometimes what is meant by ‘I can order that in,’ is actually ‘I took one of those home and it's just been sitting in my safe so I guess I don't need it.’ If this is the situation, he's quoting above list to make sure you really want it, then it will rather miraculously appear in stock while every other store can't get them.

It's way too high if you ask me, but Canadians who aren't willing to wait pay through the nose.

This most likely the truth of the matter.

I paid $750 from Froniter for my 5 or 6 inch (i cant even remember) in December 2009, and i know the long barrel ones have come down in price since. Maybe there is a premium for the 4.2 inch, but that seems overpriced to me

What he said. The 686 may or may not be a better gun but for the small difference I would go with the smith OR just order the GP 100 from any number of our site sponsors for around $700. The Ruger is a great pistol and a much better value the the smith is but not for what your local shop is asking. I bought my GP 100 from P&D, good people to deal with to.

Take Care

That's a horrible price. There are none in stock locally from what I can see but the list prices that I'm seeing are in the $650 range. If they are going up in price to $850 I wouldn't even bother, the Smith is worth the extra $50 easily.

I have had a Ruger GP100 on order now for more than half a year at a price of 629.99 from Grouse River, Just checked and they are now 699.99 for the blued version with a +70.00 add for Stainless Steel!

Shooters Choice (Alberta) lists them at $725 (GST included) but are out of stock. I bought an 'as new' used one about 6 months ago from the EE for $625 shipping in. The price you were quoted seems WAY out of line.

i got mine for 700 just over a year ago new.
blued 4.5" and that was from shooters choice in alberta.
i havnt seen any in stock since i picked mine up.

i really enjoy it, if i lost mine i could see myself paying up to 850 for another.
really fun gun to shoot.

but for that price id be hard pressed, id be looking at some other comparable guns like the 686 and such.

the allure of the gp100 is the gun AND the price.
you've not lost the price part of that allure.

There is nothing wrong with a Ruger GP100. I have owned them and they work very well. The reason most people buy them is that they cost a lot less then a S&W. I beleive then that these same people go to great lenghts to try and convince themselves and others that they (Rugers) are just as good as a S&W. The truth of the matter is that they are not as nice as a S&W, just as a S&W is not as nice as a COLT is. Will they do everything, of course they will but they just don't do it as well.

If you take people that have never shot a revolver before and let them use the two guns almost every time they will pick the Smith. The real story is buy what you like and can afford and enjoy it, they will both last a lifetime if you look after them.

People scoffing at the price he was quoted have to remember that not a single GP100 has been brought into this country post Sandy Hook, a price increase should be expected for the next batch that is imported.

Umm, no.

I have seen numerous brand new GP's around here in the last few months at various dealers.

SS, 4.2", 6"

In fact, I pondered buying the 6" SS one at WSS just 3 days ago....

Thanks for the responses, so far nothing in stock from Sponsors;

"Sorry nothing in stock"

"Other than going on backorder we don’t have any method of doing that sorry"

"Thanks for checking with us. Unfortunately we don’t. If I can assist with anything else, please let me know."

"Nothing at the moment. Rugers are on an 18mth back order so we never know
when more will be arriving. On the plus side when they do come in it's
like Christmas..lol"

"Thank you for your enquiry.
We have not seen any this year, however we will drop you a line when they arrive.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any additional questions."

"I am sorry but at this time we do not have any Ruger GP-100 revolvers in stock. We do have the Smith and Wesson 686 with the 4.2” barrel in stock. Our price on them is $895.00 plus tax."

I will continue being patient, to keep an eye on Sponsors and occasionally check EE.
