Hey CGN,

I was thinking about getting my Ruger GP100 4.2" cut for moon clips so I can also shoot 9mm out of it...similar to how the Ruger Blackhawk can shoot .38Spl/.357Mag and with a cylinder swap can also shoot 9mm. To me have a double action revolver and NOT having to swap the cylinders would make it pretty awesome.

Any issues with this? I know a lot of you might ask "why?" and its simply because I enjoy one guy that can shoot multiple calibers.

If there is no issues getting it done...can anyone recommend me a place as well as a price idea?

Thanks,

- UTAF

I don't think that would work. Once you machine down the cylinder the .040 or so for the moon clip, 9mm set up, the .357 cartridges would have .040 too much headspace and 38/357 cartridges don't snap into moon clips. I have a Webley modified to fire .45acp rounds bu't the original .455 round cannot be used for the same reason. In the case of the Webley I can also use .45 autorim which has a much thicker rim.

First off there is one very good reason why the Ruger convertable revolver uses two cylinders. The 9mm casings are tapered a little and the big end is bigger than the casings on the .38/.357. So when you try to fit them into a .38/.357 revolver cylinder they wedge tight well before they seat to the proper depth. So your whole idea is a non starter.

I guess I should have thought this through more...

I desperately want the Medusa revolver but chances of me finding a non 12.6 legal version in Canada is pretty slim and if I do find one $$$. This was my attempt at the second best thing lol.

Do yourself a favor and email or phone Armco about this.

I know Clarence has set some .38 revolvers to shoot 9mm with moonclips - I think they were Rugers but I cant remember for sure. He was showing me one last year sometime and I don't remember the details.

Anyhow contact Gunnar and Clarence and they will give you the real story :)

By the time you buy a gun then have it modified to shoot 9mm you may as well simply shop for and buy a 610 and get into shooting .40S&W with it. Cost wise it will be cheaper than a lot of modification work.

I have seen a .38 special revolver that was modified to run with 9mm in moonclips.

It works. But you can't shoot .38 special in it anymore.

the astra police was capable of BOTH 9mm and 38/357; it used a seperate cylinder and crane assembly ( different star as well- think of the entire swing out assembly) being anchored by a long pin and a push pin to lock it in place- it also used STAR clips to hold the 9mms in place-so not only was the 9mm round was anchored by the cylinder mouth in front, but the star clip in back held the rim in place
btq, if you don't know what a star clip is, think mooon clip but with the webs coming out from the centre hole rather than coming in from the rim

If you want more info about your moon clips for your Ruger give these guys a try, they are in San Antonio,TX. Give them a call and enjoy shooting 9mm from your .38/357 like I am...thousands happy bullets fired, no issues....
