I'm looking to purchase a Ruger GP100 however I can't decide whether to go with the 6 inch or the 4.2 inch.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the plusses and minuses of both? What is your preference?

Thanks,

PPC shooting or just shooting : 6 inches
Badass situation, cool factor and something unusual: 4,2 inches
My humblest opinion

I have a Stainless GP100 with the 6" barrel. I think I made the right choice - a better revolver for target shooting. If I was choosing a duty revolver or wilderness carry sidearm the choice may have been different but assuming you are going to use for target shooting at the range then 6 is the way to go

Which one feels better in your hand? Nothing else matters. Accuracy will be the same. The shorter has far less muzzle heaviness, of course. Either one will need a trigger job.
Prefer the shorter barrel myself. Shot bullseye with a 4" since the GP first came to Canada, long ago. There was no 6" in those days.

4.2 just because you can. .357 isn't so bad even when loaded hot. You really don't need much more barrel legth than 4.2 inches. However I'd recommend a .44 mag ruger redhawk if you really wanna have some fun. If you handload it is the only way to go. And you can get it in 4.2 inches, but I chose 5.5 to help keep the muzzle down. With the really hot loads it still doesn't solve that problem. By far my favorite handgun I've owned. Prolly the only one ill never sell.

I shot both and now I own the 4.2" version. Accuracy? It's just the same within 25 yards. Regarding trigger pull, Smith 686 is smoother, especially in single action.

I'd buy a 4.2" - no question. I had a 6" 686, and it always felt a BIT too long. :)

If anything, because it's the shortest revolver us non-12(6)ers will ever have!

4.2 for SD/CC. For a woodsman the 6 is the way to go. That little extra bit of barrel will milk a little more velocity from your rounds, to say nothing of the increased sight radius making it easier to shoot for accuracy.

Another vote for the shorter one. Had a 6" GP and a 6" 686. Found them both too bulky and nose heavy. Very pleased with the balance of the 4.2 GP. Accuracy at 25yds has been just as good. Am planning on using it for IDPA this year, so the 4.2" will be quicker out of the holster.

the "standard" police revolver for years was 4 inch- that was the whole crux of the prohib/restricted thing- therefore the 4.2 would be the closest to the most popular/practical unless you CAN MAKE A Deal ON THE 6 INCH- there's not all that much difference between the 2- i have both a 5.5 and a 7.5 and when you get that big, there IS a difference- but they're 44 redhawks

Mine is the blued Ruger 4.2". No doubt about it. Now, where can you find one ?

Many dealers are out of stock ... keep an eye on EE.
