i just bought a ruger gp 100 357mag and took it to the range on the weekend for some fun. but when i tried to fire in double action i found the gun wouldnt fire on 3 out of the six untill they came around in rotation again. as well i noticed that the shells are free to move back and forth alittle in the cylinder.

is this normal???? i was using #### ammo wolf reloads.

can anyone help me out iam concerned i bought a lemmon.

thanks

The trigger spring in my Smith and Wesson was a little weak to shoot double once so I just tightened it up a little and no more trouble. The hammer falls harder when shot in single style and that is probably why it worked then. Sometimes primers are a little harder than the should be too.

ls the pistol new or used, Not normal, check after firing 1st complete 6 rounds, wait 30-60 seconds, with firearm pointed down range, open cylinder, did the firing pin hit all 6 shells. lf so, try a different brand of ammo, ie Winchester, Federal, Rem ect.
See if that makes a difference.

on double action there is a bit less hitting power for the hammer and this does happen. I had the same issue with two of my GP100's. I re-installed my factory spring kit and I had no issues since. ( yes I added spring kits and messed with the trigger pulls )

Now if you have a factory new or close to new GP100 then I kind of wonder if you need to get the trigger pull and springs looked at from where you bought it. If its used and you do not know the history I would assume the springs were changed out at some time and buy a spring kit from Brownells ( $15 ) and change out the springs.

Another things is primers. Federal primers allways go off. They have softer metal. I had Winchester primers that 2 out of 100 would need to be hit twice before they went off. This is another whole can of worms.

Buy a box of factory WIN 38's and run them through, if they all work 100% double action only. I think it was a fluke. If you do get a miss, look into springs.

There is no reason the GP100 cannot work %100 of the time. ( this is where the S&W fans say good stuff about 686's ) Both are great guns.

PM me if you want to talk some more on this. ( ive been down this road a few times )

I had the same case with my 686, the tension of the man spring can be adjusted. It has a screw at the butt stock, I just screw it all the way in. I believe GP can also be adjusted, details can check with rugerforum.com.

You haven't bought a lemon. Slightly weak hammer strike + too hard primers = misfire.

From the only batch of ammo I've purchased from Wolf, he uses Winchester primers, the only ones I've ever had a problem with in my 686 (that's reloads as well as factory Winchester ammo).
