Ruger GP100 Stainless

Love my stainless 4.20"!

I was also on the fence between the two lengths and I do not regret my decision. Excellent balance.
I'm not into silhouette shooting, can't hunt with it in Canada, so the shorter barrel is just right for my needs.
Also, it's much easier for CCW south of the border.

I may get a 6" at some point, but then I'll be mounting a scope.

Here's a lengthy video on how to polish the internals in order to make it even smoother:

The wife chose the 4.2" and it is a very nice pistol, extremely well balanced and it just looks fantastic in the 4.2 version, like a little bulldog lol. I personally would chose the 4.2 over the 6"

I couldn’t shoot my 4.2 GP accurately. Must be the shorter sight radius. I was heartbroken when I sold it.

It felt better in my hand than my 6 incher, but couldn’t shoot it well enough to save my life. YMMV

i had a 6 i liked it but couldnt hit the side of a barn had a wheel gun phase but sold them as after the initial time they never got out

I used to own a 6" blued GP100 which at the time I used primarily for 25 yard target shooting and some PPC. I started to get more interested in Action shooting like IDPA and 3 gun. Quite a few guys at the clubs still used revolvers so I sold my 6" and picked up a 4.2" stainless model. It does handle a lot better in and out of the holster and has a great balance and just feels good in my hands. I've been shooting it for about 5 years now. I do find its not as accurate at the 25 yard line so I rarely use it for target shooting but do very well with it at the 5-15 yard distances in action shooting.

I have the 4.2" Match Champion, DAM, what a gun !!!! There would be some who like the 4.2 and some that prefer the 6". It all comes down to what feels best in your hands. Just because I love mine the way it is, you might not. The 6" will have a slightly longer sight plane, very slight velocity increase and a tad feeling of less recoil. Recoil is very personal, as some people find certain guns have big recoil, but when I shoot them I feel they are great, so to each their own. Go find a store that has them both and compare the feel, side to side will be your best way to decide. Either way you are looking at a great gun ! IMHO

While we can't CCW, if we were able, I'd go with the blued instead of stainless, doesn't shine and attract attention!
I bought my 4.2 blued almost 3 years ago now, I bought it for my grandson's 18th birthday present, so he will get it in another 15 years. Meanwhile, I keep the cobwebs out of it for him!

I've got the 6" GP100 and like the feel of the long, heavy barrel. I've only tried ~4" revolvers from other models and don't mind them either. Like others have said, it depends on the person, but it seems to me that among people who tried both the 4.2 and 6" GP100, more seem to like the 4.2".

It also depends on what he intends to use the GP100 for.
Silhouette shooting, definitely 6".
Everything else, I'd say 4.2".

I have a 4.2 and love it. I shoot mostly Wolf .38Spc 158gr TMJ in it and it is very accurate in the up to 20 yard. All .357 loads I've tried are not that great for accuracy in my experience...
