Is anyone shooting one in .338 win mag or the ruger proprietary calibers?

The frame seems very similar to the GSR. It looks like it would be a nice short little boomer that fits my style. Is it simply the m77 frame in a magnum action with the scout's stock and barrel configuration?

Mostly concerned with peoples experiences with shooting them without the muzzle breaks, as I am not a fan of the ear splitting effect of belted magnums in braked guns. I was not really considering scoping the rifle so getting smacked in the face by an unbraked gun is much less likely.

Thanks

It's a Ruger long action.

Ruger stopped making a "magnum" action with the death of the RSM. 338 WM (.30-06 length) does not need a magnum action (.416 Rigby length.)

But yes it's a normal M77 Haweye action. Nice rifles!

Thanks Cam, makes sense with the offerings it is in.

HeadDamage are you loading it up at lower velocities with big bullets?

I have a .300 RCM and load 220gr partitions for it. I have an NECG sight on it and like it a lot. Don't shoot it often enough though. Recoil is just fine and I hate muzzle brakes so it has always had the cap on it.

Nice, I'm thinking if I draw a 408 elk or moose tag I will be forced to pick one up (not that I don't own a few rifles already that fit the bill.)

Might have to go for .375 ruger, it's not an especially practical rifle anyways.

Good to hear, is that you way of saying I should buy a 416 Ardent?

I'm guessing the thing is pretty damn loud anyways, muzzle break or no.

How has everyone's experience with the express sights on the rifle been?

Just recently got mine. It is not a proprietary round, just the .300 Win Mag. I really like that cartridge and am already set up to reload for it. Without the muzzle brake, it's not bad. It is painfully loud with it. Don't recommend it w/o adequate hearing protection. The trigger on it is very smooth. This is my first group shot with the Express sights. It was shot at 100 yds with 168 gr. Berger hunting bullets; IMR 7828 powder. I pulled my 3rd shot, the one in the black. The group of 3 is just over an inch. I really like the feel and balance of this rifle. Working on further load development. Pretty amazing rifle IMO.

I picked up an older version (no muzzlebrake and regular hawkeye laminated stock) off the EE in 375 ruger and put a Nikon African 1-4x on it. It's an awesome bush gun, stalked a bear up a mountain through thick #### with it the first time out and didn't feel a whole lot different than packing my Ruger scout. Ammo hasn't been that bad to find, a couple boxes at WSS, a couple boxes from CT, and a couple boxes from Wolverine. I'll invest in a reloading setup for the next 100 rounds, the Lee starter kit, dies, and all the components will be cheaper than buying another 100 rounds.

The only downside is that it isn't much fun to shoot a lot, my shoulder wasn't happy after about 15 rounds through it when sighting it in... one day maybe I'll get it magnaported.

I beg to differ on the practical part. In either .338 WM or .375 Ruger you have an incredibly practical rifle. Handy, solid, reasonable weight, reasonably flat shooting and a whole lot of power in a weather resistant package. About the perfect rifle for the foothills.

Yep Cam you are correct, I am not a long range hunter by any means but the idea of throwing a lot of lead downrange has an irresistible allure for me. The express sights are a must for me.

I figure the ruger has a leg up on guide guns based on the lever action package in terms of cartridge offerings.

Just an FYI there was another recent thread on this rifle, so there may be some further responses there that may interest you to read.

Side note re: AB draws and medium bores: come fall I will also be considering which tool to use for whatever task I may or may not be lucky enough to have: new Ruger Alaskan in .375 Ruger, (x2 on a practical weather resistant beast of a rifle) trusty Sako 85 in .308 or potentially a new 300wm. Depends how I can shoot them at various distances I suppose.

Variety is the spice of life!

It is indeed, I'm now torn between the guide gun and a tikka in 338 wm for hunting season. They will look great in the safe while I beat the bush with a 336
