Hey Sharkson,
I am most definately encouraging the distributor to bring them in. I've mentioned this website and the fact that there is quite a buzz about the Ruger scout rifle and they shouldn't have any problems selling them to us Canucks. I've also mentioned about all the other rifles that are now available like the Marlin levers that have the forward mount option.
Tell me a little about your thoughts on the Leupold fixed scout scope... you say you like it, but you think the variable might be a little better? Expand please...

But to your question, the variable would expand the range of use. At 1.5, it gives you increased field of view which is helpful because an extended eye relief scope by definition has a restricted field as compared to a regular scope. At the short ranges I hunt deer in the Parry Sound area (thickness of bush), a lower magnification than the fixed 2.5x is helpful.
4x would extend the useful range of my M1A and Marlin Lever. It would also make sighting these in more accurate!

The latest email from the Canadian Leupold Distributor regarding the variable scout scope:
We are still working on getting info regarding the variable scout scope you had called on last week. As there has been no part number assigned to this scope we cannot order it in right at the moment. We are in the process of working with the Leupold custom shop to try and figure this out. Hopefully I can get back to you next week with another update.

I am just going to mount an Aimpoint ML3 on mine, maybe an M4S...
I have both Burris and Leopold scout scopes (I've built a few scout rifles in the last 3 decades). I honestly can't see any difference in their practical use, although the higher the magnification the harder they are to use properly. Anything past 2.75x doesn't work for me at all. FWIW. - dan

Here's the latest email regarding the Leupold variable power scout scope:
Hello,
I have just found out that because Leupold has designated these as a custom shop item and have not assigned a “part number”, we cannot apply for an import certificate to bring them in to Canada. That is just the way it works. Sorry I cannot give you better news. Maybe if they do well Leupold will consider adding them to their lineup for next year. I really don’t know at this point.
