I’ve seen the African Hawkeyes with gloss bluing. But most of the other Hawkeyes were matte black or satin blued as they call it. But this latest Hawkeye is a Walnut Hunter model with high gloss bluing. The rifle was bought recently. Brand new in box, never fired but had a DOM of 2014. What finish is on your Hawkeye?

When Ruger says "satin" blue, they are not referring to the matte blue BBQ paint finish, they are referring to the true bluing as in your rifle. One of the reason that I prefer the Mark II rifles is the superior finish... I detest the matte finishes in both black and stainless. The matte finishes look cheap and Mark up easily.

Thanks HC.
So this “satin blue” is the same as what’s on my rifle? The pic doesn’t do it justice on their website. Poor description of gloss blue as satin too.

That appeara to be matte, so either a misnomer in the writeup or a poor picture, but in the past, Satin bluing has been true bluing... not the matte BBQ paint. Most of the higher end configurations such as African and RSI are the "gloss" finishes, but not always... I would not own any Ruger rifle with the matte finish... did I mention that I hate it?

So you like your rifles to match your BBQ. Gotcha!

Thanks HC

I should mention that another Ruger metal finish that I really like is their stainless Target Grey... it was seen on the M77 Mark II Frontier and Target models, as well as a few other iterations... it provides a non-glare, durable stainless finish. Here are examples of the True Blue, Polished Stainless and Target Grey Stainless finishes...
