Im thinking of getting one one these in either a .260 or 7mm o8 and was wondering if any other CGN'ers own one and care to comment on accuracy, handling ect... Im wanting the laminate version. No shops in my area have any to fondle, have to mail order.

Cheers!!

I've had a compact for about three years now. It balances surprisingly well with the short barrel and is an absolute joy to carry. I carry it in my hand right under the floorplate, and walk the whole day this way with no fatigue to my hand or arm. Putting a sling on this rifle would be silly IMHO. Accuracy is about 1.5" , three-shot groups that little barrel heats up real quick! I think it could do better with more load development. I would not shoot at big game off-hand any farther than 100 yards with the compact as it's hard to steady, but with an improvised field rest [backpack, stump, tree crotch etc.] I would take a shot out to 300 yards. I had a chance to chrono some loads and found about a 175-200FPS velocity loss. Deer that it's taken don't know the difference.

The fit could be tricky, and I would suggest you shoulder one like you plan. Some bigger folks feel they are an abomination but if it fits it's a beautiful thing! I'll post some pics. for you later on.

I have one in .260 and it shoots a ragged hole. Just buy it. You will not be sorry. Ramakko's in Sudbury has a stainless laminate. I'm not sure of the caliber though. (705) 522-8889.

I have one in .243, 16" bbl and it is a far better fit and finish than a Rem. Seven I have in the same cal. No problem with 1" groups at 100 yds even with that slender bbl, although the bbl. does heat up fast. Fantastic to lug around. I even ditched the sling. have a Leopold VX II on this one but would like a smaller configuration. Maybe a small Bushnel 4X ???

Mine's a .308 walnut. Very accurate, I shoot 180 gr loads. Clover leafs at 50 and an inch and a half at 100 with a Red Dot off the bench. It replaced my 30-30 as my go-to brush/dogging rifle. When dragging deer out or leading dogs, I find the sling quite handy.
Epps is showing three of them right now Scott, but no laminate .26 or 7-08.

Here's some pics Scott, to give you an idea of scale. I just don't want to see you buy one to find it's to small for you. As I stated earlier any friends or shooters that handle my rifle either love it or hate it...no in-betweens.

I'm 5'10 170 lbs. with a 28 inch reach. The above picture is how I carry all day,my grip never tires this way and it balances so perfect.

Just to give you an idea of my mitt-size...and Cheers to you too! :p

I replaced the factory hockey puck pad with a Limbsaver grind to fit. The LC6 triggers although crisp and a vast improvement over the old style are just to heavy for my liking so in went a Timney. My rifle also wears low rings, not the medium ones supplied.
One more thing to consider. Do not go into the purchase of a Ruger compact thinking these are an ultralight rifle. They simply are not. They use the standard ruger short action [which is beefy] and with the supplied steel rings and a laminate stock you are looking at close to 7.5 pounds plus scoped with standard 3-9X 40mm objective glass. Mine weighs a hair over 7lbs with the 4X Leupold. In comparison my Kimber 84M all in is just shy of 6 lbs, but the Ruger has it beat in the reliability department.;)
I have handled the Hawkeye compact and found no discernable difference in feel between it and the MK II stock although they are cosmetically different.
Hope this helps you Scott. Let us know what you decide.

Mine is a 358 Frontier with a 16 1/2 " bbl., ideal for packing in the bush.

Do they offer the 16.5" compact in 358 Win?
I didn't think you could get it from the factory in 358...
Please someone tell me if you can, I was under the impression that I would have to buy a compact then have it re-barreled to have one in that cal.

Unless I'm mistaken the Frontier in 358 with the stubby barrel is discontinued, but I recall seeing one listed on Prophet River's site recently.
At any rate give Clay a call, he could probably find one for you.
Mine is a better shooter than I expected it to be, and it put meat in the freezer first time out... :)

What's the barrel length on these rifles?
Anyone have any links to view specs?
Thanks :)

yep - 16 1/2" 358Win from the factory. Here's mine with a canoe paddle stock - it's working clothes - http://35cal.com/ruger77_358frontier.html
