hello I am interested in building a lightweight mountain gun using a hawkeye SS 7mm/08 as a starting point . If anyone has any pics or suggestions id appreciate any ideas or pictures of peoples gun projects. I will be getting the barrel fluted and shopping for a aftermarket stock to start with. Thanks for any input or photos

Suggestions? Don't start with a ruger for a lightweight build. They are a good action, but heavy and your mount options are also heavy and limited. Unless you already have the rifle any your mind is made up - I guess it also depends on your goal weight.
Why would the 308 Win. be 1/4 pound lighter than the 7-08 ? 6.75 pounds is pretty reasonable for a inexpensive factory rifle. Although I think I would like a 18 -20" barrel, even with the extra weight. http://ruger.com/products/m77HawkeyeCompact/models.html
