Ruger Hawkeye

they dropped the left handed version of the hawkeye, and keep only the left hand guide gun ... so who is next on the chopping block.

The left handed market is aweful. And it continues to get worse. My gun buying days are largely behind me. I will continue to keep an eye open for what I like, but the thought of actually looking for something wears me out.

As you know, I am not really a fan of the Hawkeye rifles... the "matte" finish is one of the reasons... I prefer either rich bluing or "bright" stainless... one of the reasons that I like the MKII'S...

Ya.... You are pickier than I, but if I had owned as many of these as you have I could afford to be picky too :)

I really like the Whelen....... Would prefer a deep blue, but the matte black finish is hard as a rock and very durable...... And it's still got the rock solid action and three position safety I dig......

I am at my set personal limit on rifles, and plan to swap one out now and again when something "better" comes up...... You know, like an RSI in .358 win or an ultralight in .257 Bob...... That kind of stuff :)

A pic of the Whelen.... Ignore the food scraps on the floor in the background.... Lol.... My retriever got done eating and I hadn't passed the broom yet....

Pretty handy rifle there...

Don't hold your breath for the RL Bob... and tell your grandkids not to hold their breath for the RS .358 Carbine... ;)

Lmao....... Can't blame a guy for trying....... I don't blame you....

If you are into the EE and a certain model, you need to have "pounce" capability......... It has served me well in the past, and lack of it delivered exactly what I deserved........

My local Canadian Tire has good selection of most ruger models. Wholesale sport has nothing except 10/22 so my local gun store. Owner at my LGS told me simply that he does not like ruger so I guess their supply is limited by business and personal decisions of various suppliers

Brad, neat rifle, I remember when mine looked like that, before I graffiti'd the stock with "bear grylls would".... then it split between the trigger hole and whstever.....

so I got that ghey ramline..

an then I got a Kimber and now I cant fathom hunting the Whelen at 4 kegs

:)

you are making me wish it was a 3kg rifle

Nice looking rifle there,

Any idea what twist rate they made the barrels?

I've always had great results up to 250gr with the 1:16. The 1:12 custom I had was great with 200gr right up to the 310gr.

Good to see they went with 1:12, 1:14 would have been fine too.

Here's my Hawkeye Compact in rare 7.62x39. The only thing I'd ever trade it for would be my holy grail, a Ruger Deerfield.

Not calling you out at all Brad, but have you put the Whelen to much use yet (or are you referring more to your Scout)? I'm assuming the finish is the same as that on my African and I don't find it that durable at all. A lot of the sharp edges are worn to metal on mine. The rifle's seen some miles in the mountains, so I just put it down to honest wear.

Mine is just about 8 pounds.... I don't have a very accurate scale, did the weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding the rifle thing......

This one is 1:12

To be honest, The Whelen has yet to fire a round.... and the .223 Scout has very few miles on it either.... I was just going by my impression in regards to how thick the coating is and how hard it is to the touch.... I also have 4 Rugers with the all weather coating and don't find that to be durable at all.... most of them have their share of scratches and scuffs from hard use, I plan on putting the barreled actions through the blasting cabinet when they deteriorate to the point that it actually bothers me.....
