A couple of years ago I found information on a semi auto produced by Ruger chambered for the 17 HMR cartridge. Now I cant find any reference to it anywhere. What happened to it? I know that if you get a 1022 magnum, it can be rebareld for 17 cal. But I found a source where there was a rifle called the Ruger 1017. It was the 1022 action only it was in the new 17 HMR. Like the 1022 magnum, it also had a 9 round rotory magazine.

There is no reference to it on the Ruger web page, and there appears to be no way to email them for enquiries.

Finnally, I am looking for a semi auto factory rifle chambered for the cartridge. The only one I can find is by Remington. Is this true? or are there others out there, with a tried tested and reliable action?

Discontinued do to possible liability issues IIRC. You can do it yourself with a simple barrel swap but Ruger no longer manufactures the actual 10/17 with their barrel.

so what is with the .17HMR in semiauto - I understand there are issues with it firing out of battery but that seems like a relatively simple engineering problem to me. As a trapper, I'm unaware of anything quite as practical as a .17 HMR in terms of a calibre. Let's get a good, proper semiauto that has similar practicality to a 10/22 and let some powder burn!

Yep, Volquartsen Is about the only other maker of a semi auto .17HMR other then Remington. VQ's are excellent quality and very accurate and reliable. However, they do cost a fair $$$$

I believe the 10/17 was actually in the Wholesale Sports catalogue for a year.... but it's not there now!

Not sure why they stopped making them... with all the hype about the .17HMR, you'd think they'd sell like hotcakes! I'd buy one!

@canucklehead

:)

I don't know of such a release.

What is interesting, though, is that Ruger's current web page is also quiet about 10/22 Magnum.

It is only mentioned in sidenotes:
** .22 Magnum model only (10/22 RBM) incorporates a rugged steel receiver with integral scope mounts and free Ruger medium height scope rings.

** The .22 Magnum model holds nine rounds and features an 18 1/2" barrel.

But 10/22 RBM is not part of the catalog:

The official announcement for the gun can be found at this Ruger site, the date is Jan 16, 2004

Thanks Monte: Can't believe I never ran into that!... I've got a bolt action target 17/77 and its awesome, but perhaps Ruger put the 10/17 into their crappy lightweight versions... and perhaps due to accuracy issues they decided to pull it... the company doesn't need another Mini-14 fiasco.:p

Ruger and Hornady have been workin pretty hard together to push both Hornady vmax's in 17 and 20 and new Ruger rifles over the sales counters, maybe Hornady wasn't impressed and told them they'd better not spoil the good potential of the 17HMR with a crappy rifle?
If I'm not mistaken, a volquartsen holds the world record with 17hmr for the smallest 100yrd group.

Volquartsen is way out of my financial tolerance, canuckgunny.

Semi-newbie here, researching his first rimfire. 10/17 would have been the sweetest deal of them all, if it wasn't for a couple of suspicous findings from the net:
1. Ruger itself is opting for steel receiver.
2. Various 10/22 conversion kits mention that trigger groups have to be replaced when going .17 HMR.
3. In the manual (link in one of my previous posts) Ruger itself states:
RUGER® MODEL 10/22® MAGNUM
& 10/17TM chambers must be scrupulously cleaned at least every 50 shots
(see “Care and Cleaning”, pp. 26 - 27.)

I am not up to the challenge when it comes to figuring this out (that's why I am posting all these findings in this forum :)), but all of this sure smells bad to me.

Semi Magnum rimfire, out of the box, would be a very sweet deal, but I am affraid that we are not there yet.

rimfire central had a bunch of stuff about this at the time, basically ruger couldn't get the thing to cycle reliably, there were some case extraction problems and either premature or late firing(i can't recall how it was worded, sorry)
buy a 597 from Remington they work great...

seems alot of readers here with remington 597's in .17HMR disagree they work great. I would sure like the real story to provide me with a good guide on what to buy. (bit of a hijack, sorry)

Whoooooaaa! Cleaning every box? Run away! I've shot a couple CASES a year through my 17/77 and only clean it when I get the urge to... cuz I like cleaning guns every once in a while. Hornady vmax's are uber clean to shoot, if there's fouling I'd put the blame on poorly designed barrels and not the ammo (if that's what they're saying?).

In case you haven't considered this: One very specific reason I DIDN'T get a semi for 17HMR... it ain't cheap! You can reload 223 for about the same price depending on components, but I wouldn't trade the little throwaway snappers for anything.

Man, your post was pure gold. Thank you very, very much.

Not because I decided to buy 597, but because of what I learned while researching 597 on rimfire central Remington forum. Don't get me wrong, 597 might be the hidden gem, a worthy option to 10/22 for guys who don't want to spend a lots of dollars on customization.

But I decided to stay AWAY from any "blow back" semi rimfire Magnum caliber design now and in the future. The reason for that is "out of battery" problem that explains why Ruger insists that his Magnum rimfire calibers "must be scrupulously cleaned at least every 50 shots". More details about "out of battery" problem can be found here:

I grew up on the other side of "M16 vs. AK47" debate, and this is, definitely, not the type of the rifle which I would use to teach my son how to shoot. I definitely want bolt-action for .17 HMR.

Once again, thank you very much.

@canuckgunny

I am very much aware of the cost of ammo, but "blasting away" was never my cup of tea.

The idea is to do enough paper punching to prepare myself to go small game hunting, honour the tradition and teach my son how to shoot, and to find a very good exuse to spend with the little guy some quality time outdoors, just exploring this wast and wonderful country.

I simply hate the idea of missing and wounding the animal that I shoot at. With a semi, one could at least hope for the second shot.
