What do you think of the Ruger M77/17.

It looks like a nice high quality rifle but why does the CZs seem to dominate the moderately priced bolt action market?

The 10/22 definitely dominates the semi auto side.


Just wondering what people think.
 
Just looked at the Ruger site ...at $1000 US I dont call these moderately prices. My CZ Cdn .22LR came in w Tax under $625. CZ are just priced right and great rifles.

Bull... I have a couple dozen of each... the Ruger costs more and the accuracy is excellent... nothing wrong with the CZ though, probably the best bang for you buck in a bolt action rimfire.

My 77/17 in 17mach2 produced sub standard accuracy, as did my 77/17 in 17 Hornet. My CZ452 and 527 in the same chamberings , were significantly more accurate for less money.
 
I sleeved a medium weight barrel (.735" muzzle) worn out stainless center fire barrel and chambered it for the 17 HM2 and fitted it to my 77-22. It shoots fantastic groups. I have head shot grouse at 75 yards... gophers the same although I prefer a body shot on gophers... makes it easier for the birds.

I will be posting in the EE next week.

I don't get out shooting anymore and will be selling the barrel and the 17HM2 ammo or the complete rifle with a medium weight stainless 22 LR barrel that shoots very well too.

Well I ended up buying a Ruger 77/17 in 17 HMR with a Cabella's 17HMR scope for $600.

The rifle is almost mint so I think I did pretty well. I've only shot it twice so far and the accuracy has been good with several different loads.

I've owned a CZ 455 in 22lr and really liked it but the fit and finish on the Ruger is excellent.


I'm going to take it out at 100 yards soon and give it real test before gopher season!

I bought a 77/17 WSM when they first came out and it was a massive disappointment. I changed the trigger, bedded it and recut the crown. It had first shot flyers like crazy. If you let the gun sit for 15 minutes, first shot was and inch or more low then an okay group would form. Stop shooting and the first shot was wild after a bit of sitting. Totally not acceptable for a rifle I intended to use for magpies, crows and gophers around my place.

I installed a nice fat Lilja barrel and now it is very accurate.

I personally won't buy another Ruger unless I'm planning on rebarreling it, for what they cost I expect better.
