I sold the same rifle, though with a Redfield scope on it, for 750 year before last. - dan

Thanks for reply....I don't see much ammo for 338 win at my local store...and it's pricey when in stock....the rifle likes the fed premium but haven't seen it on the shelf in years....I've seen some cheaper 250 gr shells @ cnd T, that might make a decent 200yd deer gun out of it !

Magnums are not as popular are they were 20yrs ago. All the boomers who loved them before are losing interest and dying off.

The 30-06 is taking over for the magnums again.

30'06 is decent, but it doesn't throw the heavier bullets with much authority lol.
I struggle to get 2700fps+ with 180gr in my '06's.
300 Win throws them 3000fps+ with mild loads.

All true, but magnum sales are slumping nonetheless.

My 30-06 gets 2700fps with 180 Speer GS heavy loads. I'm good with that.

Probably, retail price of ammo anything mag is pretty silly last few years. Started loading for a buddy with a 300 Ultra, last box of 20 he looked at was $220 lol.
Nobody I hunt with has ditched their mags thou, from short mags to common mags to silly Ultra mags, they still run them.
I still hunt with a 6.5x55 for nearly everything, so I'm not the best spokesperson lol.
My long range target guns are mostly mags thou...6.5PRC, 7mm Rem, 300 Win, they are all very accurate.

185 or 200 gr bullets in this cartridge male a dandy deer rifle. - dan
I like 225gr SST's for that sort of work. Can load it relatively soft and still have a great deer gun.

Your deer must be much tougher than ours. Ours fall over dead for any decent centerfire milsurp cartridge and they are all under 2600fps.

Not tougher, big and healthier then most, some of the farm land is 50m from the Gatineau park it butts against, kinda want them DRT

That's the pickle that I'm in. Well, kinda the opposite. I have so many components and so much ammunition that I will never be able to shoot it all. Hell, I haven't bought anything other than a pound of shotgun powder and a couple of boxes of 22 WRF (which, of course you buy when you find) in the past 10 years. I've even got a bunch of ammunition for things I've never even owned! But I definitely won't be adopting anything that I don't have ammo in the locker for!

I use that to my advantage. Whatever bullets or powder I pick up, I have something I can use it in. - dan

Used my 338 for deer for the last 30 years. Works great.
What bullets do you use ? I ask because I stocked up on Fed prem 210 gr Nosler partion years ago , gun shoots them very accurate, but at 200yds a heart or lung shot and they whistle threw like shooting paper......they run and i have to look for them in the bush as daylight fades....there's cheaper 250 gr available but not likely as accurate at long range where the noslers shine..sooo.... now I hunt deer with a 50 cal muzzle loader....@ 150 yds or less it pretty much knocks them off their feet ! And it's early season ! So likely sell the 338 !

I have witnessed game being hit and lost with a partition right through... I am sure the animal died but it was never found. Partitions are an over rated bullet in my humble opinion.
