Hi Folks,

I just ordered one of these, thought I'd give it a try. :) Does anybody here own one, or have you had any experience with one? Specifically, I'm wondering how it will shoot with surplus ammunition.

Thanks for any comments.

Jeff/1911.

had no idea they made them.
looking forward to hearing your range report on accuracy with both surplus ammo and reloads!

i own two Frontiers (basically glorified compacts) in .308 and both are sub-MOA guns with factory ammo.

Hi MBP,

I just noticed this one on EPPS site today...didn't realize they were a current production chambering either. It's 5 3/4 lbs, with a 16 1/2" barrel. Should make a beautifully handling deer rifle with soft point loads!

Looks like this...

They are short, light and handy. I have one but have only been able to put about 40 rounds of Czech surplus through it--not even broken-in. It was going about 1.5-1.75" 5-shot groups but the light barrel heats up quickly and it was stringing the shots a bit. It likely needs the pressure point in the barrel channel to be tweaked a bit.

bradmclean, $725 for the Ruger Compact in 7.62x39 from Ellwood Epps.

44bore,

I figured I wouldn't be able to fire groups of more than 3 shots quickly, without cooling the barrel in between. I'll be interested to see how mine performs. I've got a little over 3,000 rounds of surplus fodder to use in it. :) Once I get it and have a chance to shoot it a bit, I'll post pics of some of my groups fired.

very nice!

Well, mine arrived today. :)

When I unwrapped it and saw how small it is, I probably sounded like Fat Bastard in the Austin Powers movie when he first saw Mini-Me...as I cried out:

"Christ it's Tiny...I've got bigger chunks of corn in my crap..." :)

Anyway, it IS freakin' tiny...and very light. Here are some pics with my Leupold 4X Compact scope installed. As you can see, the provided rings are very high...I think I'll see if I can find some lower ones to use.

Anyway, should be fun...I've got about three and a half thousand rounds of 7.62x39 fodder Surplus to run through it. :D

Jeff.

Here are some pics of it, alongside a roll of packing tape for reference...

I have one of the original run of stainless M77mkII 7.62x39 rifles and it is a great shooter. Holds under 1moa five shot groups with federal blue box 123gr soft point ammo and around 2moa with the surplus ammo.

I bought that rifle in .260 Remington last Fall and it's actually a tac-driver. I love it. I haven't shot anything with it yet, though.

Nice rifles guys. Im planning on hunting with the 7.62 x39 this fall, not in a bolt but an XCR. Barnes Bullets makes a 123 gr. TSX bullet for this cartridge and thats what I will be using.

Cheers!!

Wanstall's in Maple Ridge, BC had one on the shelf that I got to check out a few weeks ago.

Was totally impressed with it and there is no issues with shooting cheap ammo out of it just give it a quick cleaning afterwards....

Hi Guys,

I just had it out today...w/ a 4X Leupold Compact scope installed. I'm very pleased with the way it shoots. :)

It shoots about a 2" 3 shot group at 100 yards with Czech surplus and even better with these two loads... the squares on the targets shown are 2".

This is 4 shots w/ Federal 123 FMJ...

And here is a 3 shot group with Partisan SP ammo...what my son will use in it for deer hunting this fall. Not bad...

I bet the group shooting would be easier with a couple more power on the scope, but then it would take away from what it's for. That rifle shoots nice and I'm a big fan of having at least one rifle that is small and light for the times when you carry it for days or weeks and not fire a single shot. Deer aren't too hard to kill if you put a bullet in the right spot and that's easier to do if you're not panting and wheezing from carrying your 9pound monster over 5 miles of up and down.

Just wanted to add, you are a better shot than me at 4x when I look at the groups again :)
