Ruger M77 Compact in 7.62x39 - Targets posted now!

am I missing something here?-seems to me if I was looking for a light compact accurate deer rifle and prepared to spring the money for a ruger compact-I'd be taking the .260 over the 7.62x39 any day.I'm not being sarcastic-just making a simple observation based on comparitive ballistics between the two calibers, nor am I saying the 7.62x39 isn't more than adequite for a deer rifle-but why limit yourself when you're going to spend the money on a Ruger compact?[I also admit I have three 6.5x55 swedes-pretty much the equivilent of the .260 ,the total cost me LESS than one ruger compact...]of course,if the reason for buying the ruger in 7.62x39 is''just because I want one'' thats plenty good enough-and probably the reason we have for MOST of the guns we buy...

true-but I'm not sure I want to shoot cheap surplus in a fine rifle if its corrosive.Don't have a problem with an $200 SKS,but a nice Ruger compact that I paid close to $1000 including taxes for?

Why all the fear of corrosive surplus--just clean it after you shoot it. Don't forget that at one time all hunting and military ammo was corrosive--and many rifles survived to today in perfect condition.

Its a bolt action! It's ridiculously easy to clean! Pass a bore snake through it twice, spray some lube down the barrel, give the bolt a wipe with an oily rag. Done.

Well....260 in 16,5" barrel has lots of unused potential. 7.62x39 will do nicely in that lenght of barrel but that Ruger action is underutilized and bullet selection in .311 dia is poor. What is wrong with Ruger in 18,5" barrel in 308Win downloaded to 30-30 velocity or 7mm-08 with 20" barrel downloaded to 7-30 Waters for joungsters use that could be "spiced up" latter when he or she grows up?

as usual it comes down to personal taste-and thats all that counts.I like the 7.62x39-but in an SKS,with a Choate Dragunof stock. My weapon of choice for deer is a 6.5x55 swede with a 22'' barrel, mainly because I have dumped so many deer with it as well as a couple of black bears. And if I need to-I can reach way out beyond the capability of a 7.62x39,but that being said-my average shot on a deer is well within 100 yards anyway-and either the swede or the 7.62x39 would do the job quite handily

I bought this one mainly for a "fun gun" that I can use to shoot surplus ammo in...I'm not concerned about the corrosive thing. As mentioned - it's dead simple to clean, and almost as cheap to shoot as a .22. :)

Hi rbf,

Part of the justification for buying this particular rifle is that my 12 year old son will be carrying it this fall, as we pursue the Wily Whitetail... :) I figure with the price of surplus fodder for it (I've got 3,000 plus rounds on hand) he can practice shooting it until he's well acquainted with the rifle he'll be hunting with. Substitute some SP ammunition for the surplus, and let's go hunting!

yes-that is perfectly understandable and logical reason for using a ruger compact in 7.62x39-cheap shooting and getting lots of practise with the same rifle he will be hunting with.

Thats an awesome little rifle. My girlfriend shoots the CZ527 which seems to pretty much be the equivalent. Dead on accuracy at 100yards, the holes touch each other.

Only one thing to mention, the Partisan SP are loaded hotter and will probably shoot about 5 inches higher than the surplus ammo. I've sighted the rifle in for using soft points for deer and not the surplus rounds. For target and/or varmint/ gopher shooting , its going to be off with surplus. A few inches is not a big deal to be shooting deer at 100yards, but the loads don't shoot the same and you have to choose what you want to sight-in for.

Thanks fiddler, I'll make note of the POI differences when I go to the range next.

I bet the group shooting would be easier with a couple more power on the scope, but then it would take away from what it's for. That rifle shoots nice and I'm a big fan of having at least one rifle that is small and light for the times when you carry it for days or weeks and not fire a single shot. Deer aren't too hard to kill if you put a bullet in the right spot and that's easier to do if you're not panting and wheezing from carrying your 9pound monster over 5 miles of up and down.

Just wanted to add, you are a better shot than me at 4x when I look at the groups again :)

understableryan,

I thought about what you said about the scope power, and I agree. This morning I mounted a Leupold 2-7 Compact I had on another rifle onto the Ruger Carbine, in lower rings. Way better!

Jeff.

I thought I read that the Ruger in this caliber uses a .308 bore. Would explain the barrel heating up so fast. This would make it easier to load good deer bullets like a 150gr too. That is a sweet gun. I handled one in 308 and found it a bit short for me but seemed very handy.

I just received an email from Ruger regarding my question of bore diameter. According to Ruger bore dia. is .310. I was curious as I will be purchasing one for my 11 yr old daughter. How is the muzzle blast with the 7.62x39?

I wonder how it would do with .308" bullets.
