Hi all,

I am considering one of these two rifles and wanted to hear everyone's opinion. 300WM is my calibre of choice, but I just want to know what everything thinks about these two rifles, good, bad, ugly. Thanks.

I think the Ruger is a nicer looking gun because of its classic Mauser style action. The trigger isn't as nice as the Savage's, but that can be fixed. The integral scope base on the Ruger is a real plus in my opinion. If you were building a target gun, the Savage probably has more potential, but my Ruger M77 II shoots great, and certainly all I'd need for hunting. I was actually a little afraid to buy a Ruger, because I'd read all of these complaints on the internet about poor accuracy and bad barrels, but that certainly wansn't the case with mine in 223. If it were me, I'd buy the Ruger and either get a gunsmith to work the trigger lighter and crisper, or install an aftermarket trigger. Now my 300WM Savage might have been a lemon that was pawned off onto me because it was a lemon, but I bought it used at a gunshow, and it shoots piss poor.

I like the Ruger. Very nice rifle, and just as accurate out of the box as any other. The only reasons I went with a Savage instead is the detachable mag, Accu-trigger, and the ability to change barrels and calibres. I now have a 7mm WSM, .308, and a .223 barrel, so I can switch calibres on the same rifle, which leaves more room in the gun safe for more fun stuff.

Erik.

My Ruger 77mkII 30-06 stainless is a real good shooter and a nice looking rifle. It came with a gray lam stock on it and was about the only ss bolt I could find with a left bolt. The guys at the range often remark on how nice it looks. I had it bead blasted to take off the shine. It is a bit heavy with the lam stock but then it sucks up some of the 06 thump too. And I like the looks a lot better than the Savage.

They are both fine rifles. The latest Savages quality and customer service are first rate. Heck, their barrels are good enough to compete with high priced custom barrels.Mine does. They have solved the feeding issue with the center feed magazine and the trigger with their Accutrigger.Which other rifle is as easy to switch calibers, from 223 to 350RM.Even though I have two of the new SA 10 series,I think they are ugly, this is from someone who likes Enfield P-17.

I'd pm Sakoalberta and see what he's got in your price range.
He has some pretty nice stuff in his inventory.
Don't under estimate the Savage's some shot very tight groups and I like the detachable mag's myself.
