A friend has lost the bolt for his M77 tang saftey 270 rifle. My first reaction was, "you are s******d"
Does anyone have any ideas as to where he can get a replacement and what would be involved if he found one as far as fitting etc..thanks, Bob

Almost certainly have to send it to Ruger USA to have a new one fitted, at substantial cost.

Is this one of those cases where someone thought he would be soooo smart and soooo safe that he removed the bolt to hide somewhere and lost it?

Lib-Hater. That is exactly what he did. Trying to be extra safe with two young sons and a spouse who doesn't know much about guns or or like them in the home. Some guys are unlucky in this respect.
Now he needs to get his PAL.
thanks for the replies.

Locking them up is so easy to do... he could have locked the bolt in a briefcase, or with his ammo in an ammo box... or used a trigger lock...

Hiding the bolt ... well not the best way for sure...

If he buys another similar rifle he can have it set up so the bolt will work in either rifle.

If you lose the key to your trigger lock take a hand drill and a ¼ inch drill bit and carefully and slowly drill a hole about ¼ to ½ inch deep where you usually put the key in. CAREFULLY AND SLOWLY! The drill will generally turn the lock open after the last pin is drilled away. Go into the kitchen and dump the lock in the trashcan. Then go to Newfoundland Speed and Sport, “Canadian Tire” and buy a new lock for $9.95.
If you misplace the bolt for your gun and finally come to the conclusion that it aint gonna ever get found. Bite the neck off a bottle of rum, rye or vodka and start calling every gunsmith and parts place you can find. If you find a used bolt, find some way to come up with $250 to $400 for the bolt and fitting and send the gun and bolt to a gunplumber to be fitted.
The cheep way out is to send the gun to Ruger. For what ever reason Ruger parts are some of the least expensive in the gun industry. I would phone or email Ruger and get a quote. It would probably be simplest to let a dealer with an import / export licence mule the gun down to Ruger and back for you. If you happen to like paperwork and red tape you can skip the dealer and probably save yourself a hundred bux and do it yourself. Prepare for a learning curve and make certain you insure the gun for double what its worth. Rod

Bolts are one of the many parts Ruger insists be fitted by them. Your buddy can send it to their Canadian Repair Station.

"...any competent 'smith can fit one as well..." True. Except that Ruger won't sell any parts they insist be fitted by them. Ruger is terrified of liability law suits. Frivolous or otherwise. Seems to me they've lost at least one Stateside.

I contacted the Canadian repair center and she told me the bolt for that model is unavailable-even from their American supplier.
I guess he is out of luck.

A guy I know did the same thing at the end of a November hunt with his M77 30-06. He couldn't find one anywhere and ended up using a different rifle for a while. Two years later, he found it in a box while digging out his Christmas lights. He still has no idea how it got into that box.

The moral of the story - he keeps the bolt in the rifle at all times except for cleaning.

Tell your buddy to look for something else, then maybe he'll find the bolt.;)
