Ruger M77 Mk1 - Opinions

how much? keep in mind you have your choice of pretty much any Mark II or Hawkeye, brand new, for around $630-680. so unless you are saving a significant amount of money or it has an amazing stock i wouldnt really bother. there were a lot of issues with the old tang safety models like inaccuracy (Ruger used to outsource the barrels to the cheapest bidder) and poor triggers that have been addressed on the newest rifles.

Just further to what Rembo says. The Ruger 77 prior to the Mk II's were just the Model 77. Sometimes they are referred to as the "tang safety" models, but that's not official, it just describes the safety on the first Ruger 77's.

That said, personally I like 'em. I had one previously in .300 Win Mag with a 24" barrel. Shot clover leaf 3 shot groups at 100 yards with my pet load using 70 grains of IMR 4350 behind a 180 gr JHP. Only sold it because I wanted a .300 Win Mag in a 26" barrel so I went to the Browning composite stalker.

I currently have one Model 77, a nice "like new" Ruger 77 "tang safety" model in 7x57 Mauser that I got off the EE in one of the very first incarnations of CGN. I've shot a 5/8" 100 yard 3 shot group with it with factory IVI 139 gr ammo.

I really like the tang safety style M77. The triggers are better than the newer M77 II. With spring changes they are actually a pretty good trigger, although they are usually set up pretty heavy from the factory. The best way to make them shoot tighter groups is to free float the barrels by taking out the pressure point at the end of the forend. A lighter trigger, and freefloating the barrel, make for a tough, good shooting hunting rifle. But, like has been said, the new Hawkeye is priced pretty well, and offers alot of gun for the money. Good luck, Eric

That is one ugly rifle....you should sell it to me.

I have always been a fan of the "tang safety" M77 and still am.
Have a couple and have not seen any worse groups with these over any other "factory rifle with factory ammo"

I personallly like the ruger M77 rifles, and own 2 at present time. Some guys will tell you that accuracy is not great, but I have yet to come into that problem, you just need to find the right load. They are rugged, I love the mauser style action, controlled fee, and recaoil well. The new trigger works well.
But my only pet pieve is they never dropped a adjustable trigger in them.

I am sold on them.

I just recently bought a M77 MKII in .338 Win mag, and it shot horrible groups, but with some advice on floating the barrel, etc, and shooting it "dirty", it now shoots nice, and last Monday I shot a nice Black Bear with it.:D While I do really like it, knowing what I know now, I think maybe I would have rather bought a Tikka with a wood stock in .338 WM, but I definitely would have spent a lot more. But for the price, I do really like it.:canadaFlag:

I have a 1976 Model 77 in .270 Win. It has the tang safety and an adjustable trigger. I use it as my primary deer rifle and absolutley love it. I have had no issues with it whatsoever.

Just to add....The tang safety Rugers do not have the mauser style extractor/ ejector and controlled feed.

I should also note I do have one Hawkeye as well that is not a great shooter so far out of teh box in a 300 win mag, but that is likely because i have not given it a chance. It did not shoot my target loads well at 100 yards or 165s or really anything. It needs some TLC I think and load development
