Hey,

I was skeptical about the accuracy of these 1st generation M77's as they had their barrels made out of house before Ruger began making their own barrels in house.

Turns out my .308 shoots these Federal 165gr Sierra Gameking BTSP quite well at 200 meters. I was able to get a sub-MOA group, and I am hoping that hand loads will yield something even tighter.

That red recoil pad (brick) needs to be changed out for better LOP and recoil reduction, ouch after awhile.

I had three, a 7X57, .280 and .308 and they all shot very well... I have over the last number of years sold off all my older M77's in favor of the Hawkeye MKII'S in Frontier, Predator and AW formats... I much prefer the newer MKII'S.

How does the accuracy compare for the MkII and Hawkeyes vs the Tang Safeties? Can you operate the 3 pos safety without altering your firing hand grip?

Did you find that the thin barrel throws the 3rd shot off?

The big selling point for me in the Mark I is the tang safety, it's quite intuitive. I do wish that the action was CRF rather than PF with a claw extractor. The triggers are supposedly better and user adjustable. And the stock dimensions are better than the MkII, although the Hawkeye is supposed to have went back to the MkI shape.

Not a 3 position safety on the tang safety models.

Sorry I was referring to the Mark II and Hawkeye with the 3 pos safety on the bolt. I tried a similar one on a Winchester M70 and found it a little awkward at the shouldered position.

They are a solid action, although back in the day people looked down on them cause the receiver were investment cast vs forged. The bolt wobble is minimal when pulled to the rear. Only gripe is the short LOP, and lack of external blade ejector.

I am a very big fan of the current production M77 MKII'S... and I love the 3-Position safety... but I have very big hands... I was never really a fan of the tang safety. All of my current MKII'S have proven to be accurate and the sure as heck are made solidly... they can take abuse and rough handling, if you are so inclined, personally, I'm not.
