Ruger M77: What's it worth?

OK, I'll add to the kafuffle. Tang safety on the wrist. I HAD a 243 like that and it would absolutely not shoot accurately. I could get groups down to two inches, but most were worse and rarely was one better. It was well bedded, so it wasn't that. I have left over's of every weight bullet I think they ever made in 6mm.
The information I got was in these older 77s, Ruger purchased the barrels. Some were apparently OK, and I can assure you, some were not.
Also, in the hunting field, my hand would accidently push the safe to off, without me knowing it.
I wrote a hardluck story to Ruger about the safety coming off, thinking they may consider it a liability issue and do something about it. They told me to take it to a gunsmith and maybe he could make it stiffer!

I have one like that in 308 and would not sell it ever also I have 5 years in the bush with mine and never once have I hit the saftey.
A friend of mine had the same problem as H4831 in 308 and it would shoot barn door size groups at 300 yds. He tried a bunch of different loads, had it bedded on Rugers advice, it improved a bit and finally Ruger replaced it with another one that would shoot groups the size of a S**t House door at 300 yds. He sold it at a loss, the new owner had another barrel installed then it shot great.

My tang safety ruger was in 7 rem mag. It also was a 2.5-6" gun at 100 yards. Not accurate at all. Sold it, and was happy to be rid of it. I've never really been a fan of ruger ever since [but I did recently buy a 10/22].
I'd say you could get $500 for the rifle if you wait, but for $450 it'd be out the door pretty quick.

I recently bought a .25-06 rem and it shot 1.2" groups at 100 yards if I used a rest. (Factory loads and some home rollies that weren't actually built for this particular .25-06.
My tang safety is anything but loose. It isn't bedded. pretty much stock except that I bought a laminated stock from the U.S. for 92 bucks, krylon painted all the metal, and now she's ready to help our local caribou population by my soon-to-be furious wolf culling spree this winter. Heaven help them.

In complete contrast to the experience of inaccurate tang safety M77's that others are writing about, mine in .30-06 will shoot under an inch quite easily. as will a friends in 7mm RM. It definitely shows that when it comes to this series of M77, that you can't generalize that they are all bad as each is an individual rifle and will shoot based upon how good the barrel it came with is. This is true of all rifles to some degree or another though.
I've never experienced the issue of accidentally slipping the safety off while hunting, but can see how it would happen in some instances, although again this can happen with other rifles as well.

And there are lots of avenues a guy can take to increase accuracy of any rifle. Mine shoots 1.2" with zero effort. The rifle is not bedded, ammo is not worked up for it, scope could be better, and some smoothing of the barrel internals could help also. I am happy with mine as is. Too much trouble for 6 or 8 millimeters better accuracy.

my M77 in 7mm Mag is the same
huge pain but while the barrel is cold it will shoot fine. so its sighted for the first shot the second shot is always 2" to the right and high the third shot is 4" right and low
but as a backup hunting gun it ok.
I recently re stocked it and will have to try it out again and perhaps work on the bedding again.
