I have owned a couple dozen M77's over the years... I liked the MKI's... I "LOVE" the newer Hawkeye MKII's... prefer the safety, prefer the bolt and extraction, prefer the feel. I own six or eight... hmmm, how many do I own, gotta think about that... the answer is, "not enough."

I'll go against the general consensus so far and say that I prefer the old tang safety models, in spite of them being push feed. The safety is exactly where it should be. The tang safety models were much smoother in operation than the MK II in .338 that I had. There were also subtle changes in stock design between the two, that I don`t particularly care for, especially in the RSI models. The originals were designed by Len Brownell, and are the best looking stocks to ever come on a factory rifle.
I totally agree with this statement, my '76 vintage tang safety 257 is one of the smoothest functioning rifles of any make that I have had and the stock is probably the most comfortable for me of any factory stock..... its a keeper.
Funny how tastes and preferences differ... I had tang safety M77's in .243, .257 Bob. 7X57, .280 and .30/06... after trying the CRF MKII's I was so pleased with the changes made that I sold off my whole early model battery and replaced them with MKII's...
I've got two mark 11s... same as the hawkeye minus the improved trigger and stock improvements I believe. One look at the action when they first came out and like hoyt I was sold. It. Is. Robust!! Way overbuilt, mauser heritage very durable and easy to work on. Which is a good thing because as with any of today's mid price point rifles tooling marks and lack of perfect finish is the norm. Nothing wrong with the tang safety rifles but to me they just belong in the boring group of good push feeds like Remington, higher end Savage, Tikka etc.
However, like said the mk 11s do come with some warts fortunately very easy to address. Namely:
-rough feeling action fix: cycle it several hundred times while watching tv, loading unloading while hunting etc. clean and reoil often and viola very acceptable smooth robust action.
-trigger. fix: toss that creepy heavy POS! Or glean some info in the net take it apart and hone it here and there that's what I did it didn't lighten it a whole lot but it is much much crisper without the gravely creap
I look at them at like buying a 9N ford tractor it might take a little tinkering but they are so overbuilt and easy to work on they're an excellent platform to go with. K, maybe that's a bit too belittling but u get my drift.

When they first came out I hated them... really thought they where stupid looking and would be nasty to shoot. Years later I got one on a deal in a 338win and it turned out I loved it.
