Ruger Mark III Target... your thoughts

I went to my club this afternoon and spent a very enjoyable hour shooting my
Ruger Mk 111 target model.
Not one problem in all the shooting.
Accurate, reliable & not that expensive. What's not to like.

Thanks to Jo Brooks .. I landed this Mark III Target... the last one in stock, I was told....10 days from order to my door step..

It's official ..this is one solid pistol !

Maybe they will starting making a 9mm version soon!!!!!!

Ya the MK I/II/III is the standard by which all other modern 22lr pistols are measured. My only complaint is that they need a trigger kit to live up to their potential as the factory trigger crap. The MK II kit is $99.99 from Brownells so it will ship, however you need a MK II hammer bushing as well which will require a seperate order. This cleans up the trigger and gets rid of the magazine disconnect. So get the accurizing kit/hammer bushing from Volquartsen and then get back to us on how much you love it. ;) (also a magazine speed loader to save your fingers)

It's a Mark II, and it's not 5" barrel as he states, actually it has a 5.5" barrel.

Let's hope his shooting is more authentic than his knowledge of the gun.

Excellent classic firearm (design anyhow) not so much that the Mk III is old. Both of my daugthers have learned the fundimentals of marksmanship on Ruger Mk 1 and 2's. They are "bulletproof"! Only complaint from the girls was it wa a tad heavy over extended practise but my Walther P22 meets the need for a light weight shooter. I say buy it!(I am bias however ;-)

Have fun!

The $100 limit should be becoming $500 soon.
The ITAR ruling has been made but not printed out yet, it seems.

Love mine...

The target below is 25m with 40 rounds out of my Mark III Stainless

Very nice. Which ammo where you using?

The Rugers are nice guns. But then so are the Browning Buckmarks. And S&W Model 41's.

Out of the box the Browning and S&W have nicer triggers than the Ruger. But the Ruger has far more of an aftermarket to fix any such issues.

Yup. I also found the trigger on the Rugers are OK but the Browning I have fired has a nicer trigger. Also the stock grips on the Ruger are cheesy unless going to the Hunter model with the wood grips.

For those considering buying a Ruger 22LR pistol:

I own a Hunter with modified sights (Had target sights put on to replace the fiber optic). Beautiful pistol. I also own a blued much shorter bull barreled MK3. It's the best all around for use. I believe it's 5" maybe 5.5" for the barrel. You can target shoot and have fun at the range using it more like a duty pistol for practice.

I highly recommend getting a Stainless model. They tend to have slightly better fit/finish which makes the brutal process of putting them back together a bit easier after cleaning. Plus they take G96 better which makes cleaning even easier.

Also the plastic grips aren't that great. I had one crack on me. I'd look at upgrading those.

One last thing. I would get the MKIII over the MKI or MKII. Yes it has a few extra "safety" features but you don't even notice that when shooting. The internal lock has to be activated with the key. So just don't. The mag safety I don't even notice it. The main reason I say spend the minimal extra on the MKIII is the magazine release location. On the MKIII it's in the conventional location up by your thumb. On the MKI and MKIII it's a European style bottom of the grip mag release. Which isn't bad but I do prefer the more common location by the thumb.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a SS target model. Very nice pistols.

This picture gives you a bit of a reference for the two barrel lengths compared to a prohibited length S&W 9mm. As you can see the shorter barrel is close enough for general shooting. Plus it's much easier to shoot then the S&W.

Notes on the screen of the video rectify the mistake he did wrt the barrel length.
However, you are still to convince anybody here that the gun is a mk2 instead of a mk3.

I know many of this guy's videos since quite some time
and he seems to me more credible that many other people, including FPS Russia.

I have a Ruger Mk 3 Target. I bought it well used and have put thousands of rounds through it.
It never jams or has a feed problem and is very accurate with the cheapest bulk ammo.
You can't go wrong with one.

Please check the video, at 0.12 you'll see the pistol in the video has no loaded chamber indicator (Mark IIIs have it),
but it has a bolt-hold-open lever (Mark IIs have it, but not Mark Is)
Therefore my humble conclusion, it's a Mark II. I just wish you guys would have seen this too.

You are absolutely right. Good catch!

Also, when I googled the differences, the ears of the bolt are tapered towards the front on the mk3.
In the video, the ears are straight.

I will be shooting my Mark II target 5.5" stainless tomorrow.
It is an incredible gun, I bought it new 25 years ago, and it still looks and shoots like a brand-new pistol.
