Ruger Mark IV Tactical

I haven’t owned a .22LR pistol in close to 30 years. Last week on an impulse, I bought a Ruger Mark IV Tactical. I’m regretting having been depriving myself unnecessarily for so long.

What a sweet shooting, well made pistol! It’s not “small” by any means; even though it’s a fairly short barreled version of the Mark IV, it’s HEAVY. You know there isn’t anything on it that’s plastic past the grips.

I spent most of the day at the range yesterday & burned through close to $70 worth of ammo...yup, two 500 rd. Boxes. What a laugh; I can go to the range for an hour and burn through $70 worth of 9mm in under an hour.

I spent a couple hours Thursday going over the gun with a fine tooth comb. I don’t know how Ruger builds these to this level of perfection for the price they charge. I’ve had custom built guns costing 5 and 6 times this much that weren’t built to this level of precision; everything is polished, no machine marks, tolerances so close in some cases you have to lube it by wiping an oily rag over it gently; no room for drops of oil, they get squeegeed out.

The one button takedown is a HUGE improvement. They were such a PITA to reassemble in earlier generations, this thing can be taken down for cleaning in under 10 seconds....well under. Reassembly takes the same amount of time.

The sights on it are good, but with the top rail, a bit tougher to acquire. I had a Vortex Crossfire sitting around, virtually new, and with a rail already there, there really is no good reason NOT to put a red dot on it, so the Vortex was mounted. I spent the first ten minutes at the range dialing in the RDS, then started shooting some groups. AMAZING! Holy Crap, does this thing every shoot! 3 & 5 yds, 10 rd groups were pretty much one ragged hole...I’ve never shot so well! I pushed out to 15 then 25 yds & they opened up...2, 2 1/4in. Shooting offhand, completely unsupported! I rested it on my range bag and ran full mags for groups at 25 yds. The smallest group I shot was 1.45in.

I was/am stunned at how accurate this gun shoots; my favorite semi auto is my Glock 48. I’ve run 4450 rounds through that pistol since getting it on June 2, so I’m very familiar with it, and very comfortable with where and how it shoots. I shoot it better than any pistol I’ve ever owned, and I know without a doubt I would really struggle to shoot 3in, 10 rd groups at 25 yds resting on a bag, but sub two inch groups were normal with the Ruger. I’m thinking I may put a compensator on it; obviously not for recoil, but to increase my speed a bit by reducing muzzle flip.

I really wish we had the latitude to use these for plinking/squirrels, gophers...they’re as accurate as my 10/22, and it’d be way more fun.

It may have been an impulse buy, but it was a good impulse, for once. Very impressed with this pistol. If you have the opportunity to shoot one, take it. If you already own one; you know what I’m talking about.

Glad to hear my friend, waiting for my MarkIV 22/45 this week :)

How is the trigger ?

I bought in advance the volkartsen accurazing kit after watching youtube videos about the heavy trigger for a 22 (like on most firearms unfortunately), its supposed to make it around 2pounds after installation.

Nice :)

And I fully agree with how fun (and cheap!!!) .22 pistols are, especially well made ones like these...they have 100s of options for upgrades.

I am looking at getting a Mark IV Tactical or Target for the fall as well :)

I’m normally a Glock guy....a gen 5 Glock guy specifically...earlier gen triggers sucked eggs, the gen 5 are good enough to leave alone. This Ruger is SO far ahead of the Glock Gen 5 triggers, they can’t even be compared. Mine breaks at 4lbs, 2oz. after maybe 5 minutes of polishing trigger components and a day at the range. for me, it’s almost perfect. I’ve got an SR-22 carbine that I put a Timney trigger in it. it breaks just under 2 pounds, it’s a beautiful, sharp, crisp trigger....and just a wee bit too light, if I’m honest. no wiggle room for sloppy finger placement at all.
This trigger, with a higher break point coupled with very smooth takeup, nice, linear stacking & very crisp break is really, really nice. I’m not tempted to improve it right now...I may at a later time, but I have a feeling this isn’t worn in as much as it may be. If I could lose five or 6 ounces in weight, it would be perfect, I think. I have a 70’s S&W model 17 Target Masterpiece ( bought new) and it’s single action pull is 2 1/2 pounds and it’s too light for me to be completely comfortable. I’m in a happy place around 3 1/2 pounds with a pistol; light enough to be really accurate with it, but not so light that an angry thought touches it off.
I’ll do some reading on the different options available; if I can find something that is easy enough adjust and consistent, it may be a winter mini-project, but I’ll leave it alone for the time being.

Nice :)

HIGHLY recommend the tactical. I handled a target, and I handled the tactical 22/45; this felt the best by a good margin. I like the extra weight over the 22/45 version, it feels better balanced to me than the target; I know many/most like the slightly nose heavy feel of the target, but I’m not in that camp. I like how neutral the weight feels, even with the red dot mounted. I played around a bit with the position of it on the rail, since I read a couple of people saying they preferred it almost midway down the rail, but to me it front loads the weight more than I like. The extra barrel length in the target theoretically should improve accuracy, but it’s already crazy accurate; I don’t know I’d want the increased bulk. I’ll NEVER shoot this gun to it’s full capability...it’s WAY more accurate out of the box than I’ll ever be

Thanks for the post I've been eyeballing this gun for a while think I might pull the trigger and finally think I might pull the trigger and finally get it
