Ruger mini 14 182 series with s/k mount

I have a older ruger so i went with the s/k mount because the gun was not set up for a scope.The mount is great and very sturdy.I put leupold rings on it and mounted a vari x 2 3-9.Now the problem is i can not dial the scope to go low enough???The best i can get is 8 inches high at 25 yards.Iam more of a bolt action guy and have never had this problem before.Any imput would be great?Different rings maybe???Thanks

Did you put the "lowest" rings you could on it?
Is the front bell close to the rail?

I think the rings are lows but there is about a 1/4 inch gap between bell of the scope and the barrel guard.
