Want to get a shoulder rifle for general non-restricted use .. I'm stuck between the ruger and the cz.

I would like to get an AR, M14 (USGI) type rifle but they are just so darn expensive. I also am afraid to buy one of the above and wish I had the other.

So you all have shot these, tell me the pro's and cons :) PLEASE no bashing .. not looking for MOA here .. just something I can take to the range and possibly out hunting .. shoulder fire, iron sights.

PS - mods please move if in wrong section

Get the VZ, and then start buying made in Canada accessories:D. Cheap ammo and good shooters, and they drive the libs mad, what more could you ask for?

I have a older stainless mini30, with milsurp non cor and Norc soft points, I can get a 3-5 " groups at 100 yds with a scope. But my trigger is a stiff bastard, if I can get it tuned a bit, this should help. Otherwise, good plinker, handy and not much bite. And it's stainless, which makes crawling through snowbanks less worrysome. Haven't tried it yet with "good" ammo, that should help the cause a fair bit. For the price, not bad at all. Plus very easy to take down and clean.

The VZ's (all the ones I have shot) will hold 3"-4" groups at 100 with crappy ammo easily.

I was looking at the VZ, but isn't it restricted? I realize a chromed lined barrel is much better (making the choice between the mini-30 and the VZ even harder), but with the VZ being restricted, its sorta off my list and i'm stuck with the non-chrome lined CZ.

PS - if someone does sell a non-restricted VZ, please let me know who sells them!

I don't know that the CZ would be more reliable than the mini, I think that they are both really good on that score. To me the main difference would be do you want a military rifle or a rifle with better sights and scope mounting.

as stated in other threads the accuracy of the Mini(I think both the 14 and 30) is supposed to have been improved with a complete re-tooling of the production line in the last year or two. But I have yet to find concrete evidence of this and all I see is hearsay or a review from some gunrag and from what I read hear, you should not take info from a mag to serious.:D

I really am thinking of a mini as well but was leaning to the new 6.8SPC but now I think this may be a bad choice(cost wise).

can anyone substantiate these claims of improved accuracy?

...I don't think you have much of a dilemna on your hands. I have NOT shot a MINI but I have held and visually inspected a "30" and a "14" and can tell you the fit and finish is definitely better than my CZ-858.
If you want a "military" rifle go with the 858 as there are lots on the EE, and enjoy the bonus of four magazines and all the other goodies so readily available, it seems the CZ-VZ is the darling of the canadian aftermarket right now, and ammo is plentiful. Do you put your rifle away dirty??? if so the 858 firing corrosive milsurp ammo is not for you. All said I love my 858 it has all the attributes your after and is a joy to shoot, and next season will hunt with it too. I also currently own 2 ruger firearms and they are both great value for the money. Either way I don't think you will lose.

P.S. to give you an idea of CZ-858 accuracy, this is a 14" diameter plate I shoot offhand at 200 yards with irons with 4/5 hits. I am by no means a sniper but I would feel more than confident hunting deer sized game with my rifle at medium ranges.

Good luck with whatever you choose,
Mad Mikey.

VZ for sure! Ruger Minis in whatever caliber are really sporting rifles. Sure you can accessorize it (folding stock, flash supressor etc), but it is not really a "black rifle". My $0.02.

Just my 02 cents.

Do not buy the Ruger mini 14.

Barrel is not accurate at all once you shoot over 50 yards.

Okay, the next logical question, can i get a VZ-58 (i've heard about a VZ-58L??) that's non-restrictive? Who definatly has them in stock?

I think i'm gonna call Wolverine supplies right now to check :)

Ruger mini 14

Cz 858 for sure ! Mini 14's have horrible accuracy. Although I have seen one ruger in 7.62x39 that when tuned was o. k . But it was tuned by an expert.:kickInTheNuts:
