Recently acquired a new Mini-14 for a price that I just simply could not pass up. Compliments my collection of Ruger autoloaders nicely including a Mini-30, Deerfield Carbine and 10/22. :p

My scope of choice for my new Mini-14: https://www.optics-trade.eu/ca/schmidt-bender-1-8x24-exos.html

But settled on a Bushnell Banner 1.5-4x20mm for about 2% of the cost of the S&B Exos. ;)

The accuracy of this rifle isn't bad and is certainly good enough for my purposes. Check out the groups at 100 meters using select ammo. I might like to give the certified Z-MAX ammo a try - just in case.

Just in case...

Newer Mini's like yours are shooters for sure. Just be prepared for the haters...they'll be along any second now. "OMG! My Mini can't hit the side of a barn, from inside the barn! I'm sooooo butt-hurt!"

Mini's are great little guns. :)

Unfortunately there are two very different rifles out there that share the Mini 14 name, the 181 series ruined the name with its terrible reputation while the 581+ series like the OP has are hands down the best value in a non-restricted .223/5.56 in Canada.

is there a good and bad model in the Mini 30, as well?

OP, how is your Mini 30 for accuracy? Is it a newer one or an older one? What ammo do you use. I have been thinking about getting one.

My Mini-30, which is a newer one, is capable of 1-1/2" groups off the bench rest using handloads. I follow the data in the Hornady Handbook using Reloder7 with 123gr SP projectiles.

Using milsurp ammo I get 3" to 4" groups - quite consistently. :p

I agree with your post. I'm glad you said it twice!

The newer Minis have shown improvement in the accuracy field. The groups look alright.

Something about the clickety-clank when the bolt is released to chamber a round...

I'm liking my blued/birch Mini-14 more than my stainless/synthetic Mini-30.

I'm going to grab a Mini 583 series tomorrow, hope she is a good shooter as well. Not sure if I'm going to run a scope, red dot or just use the irons yet.

Real decent aperture sights on the Mini's. I think you will be impressed.

Be careful when adjusting the aperture upwards. If you over-do it and raise it too high like I did, the windage screws will lose contact with the aperture. If you keep turning the windage screws inwards they will disappear into the aperture housing. To recover these the rear sight base will need to be removed to get them out.

When this happened the following sound bite came to mind :p -

I absolutely love mine! I bought it new a little less than a year ago. Mounted an Aimpoint PRO 2moa red dot sight on it and picked up 1000 rds Hornday Steel Match 55gr JHP. After a bit of shooting getting 3"+ plus groups at 100 I sent the trigger to High Precision Services in Mission, BC(yes they are a site sponsor). They did an outstanding job on it and now if I do as I should it will shoot 1.5" groups at 100yds. I like the rifle so much it is now my main coyote gun. I even sold my #1V 22-250 as I love shooting this rifle a whole lot more. I originally bought it with the intention of being my truck gun, which it is in effect because if I am in my truck it is also no matter where I am going or what I am doing. It's the Mastercard of rifles.....never leave home without it!! :d
