Ruger Mini-14

I had one 20 years ago. Second worst rifle I ever had for accuracy. Accuracy was too poor to give any satisfaction. I very seldom sell a rifle. Sold that one.

But I also have a Mini 30, and it will group under 2". Very nice rifle.

The newer ones have a larger profile barrel than in the past, no longer pencil thin...

both the target and regular mini-14 have only increased the diameter of the barrel under the gas block by .0625". until now they had 2 different gas blocks: one with a larger (.625") inner diameter for the Mini-30, and one with a smaller (.5625") inner diameter for the Mini-14. now they have moved both rifles to a single, .625" gas block which makes the Mini-14 barrel 1/16" thicker but also cuts down on their production costs since they are only making a single type of gas block.

so the barrel is still pretty thin, and the barrel under the gas block of the target Mini is that same thickness.

if i bought one now, i would buy the standard, 580 series stainless Mini-14. i would leave it at the gunsmith and have the front sight moved back and the barrel threaded to a standard 1/2" x 28 tpi, and have him work on the trigger. then i would buy the heaviest AR-15 flash hider i could find, or make my own. couple other cheap mods would be to add a recoil buffer (or make your own), replace the gas bushing for a smaller one and evenly retorque the gas block screws.
at this point it should be shooting sub-2 MOA with factory ammo - which is perfectly acceptable to me for a lightweight carbine.
