I have heard that the Mini 14's are poor shooters but was wondering what mods can be made to make them shoot consistant MOA.
Any people arund here play with Mini 14's and know of a good smith that can get them shooting MOA?? What mods work best with them??

Cheers!!

I've had a couple Mini 14 Ranch rifles, an older pre-ranch Mini 14 and a Mini 30. None gave the type of accuracy that I would've liked. Mind you this was right out of the box performance. Never really tried to have them accurized, however. I have to admit I still like the lines of a scoped Mini 14 Ranch rifle, though.

"...make them shoot consistant MOA...." How much money do you want to spend? Consistant MOA means a new, match grade, barrel, new sights, and trigger work. You'll likely have to spend more money than the rifle is worth to get it to shoot consistant MOA groups.

I love my mini. In fact that and my 10/22 are the two rifles I find most fun to shoot. Hoever they weren't meant to be precision rifles, more take the family out and go plinking type rifles, and they cant be beat for that.
Better designs out there for sub MOA shootin IMHO.

P.S. Just got my C-8, but I've trusted my life to the mini-14 many times.

Doesnt shoot any better or worse then say a Vz-58, Sks, ak-47 or 74 SU-16, or even an AR that matter although the Ar has the edge on all of them as far as accuracy.
But thats the class I put the mini in. Accurizing any of them to me is silly, but can be a fun project.

Best and cheapest way to make a min14 shoot better is to sell it to some unsuspecting A-Team dude and buy a bolt action. Period.

I pity da fool dat get's one!

How??

High risk take downs, house clearings, active shooter incidents, tracking armed suspects through the bush ect.
A patrol carbine more or less.

I didn't realize you were a LEO.

Hard to believe that an out of the box Mini could even be considered accurate enough for law enforcement work...

who said they need accuracy?

room to room clearing, woods....what necessary precission?.
It feels good in your hands and it's nimble.
Remember M1 Carbine? - one of the most loved in WWII.....

Most respond well to the installation of a muzzle brake, I experienced up to 50% reduction in group size by this only.

It doesn't work on all minis though.

In my experience with several Mini-14's in the past, yes the accuracy tends to be indifferent. The rifle itself is picky as to what ammo it likes, but some serious range work and experimentation with different loads and load combinations and you will eventually find one that will shoot HALF decent groups. (What I like to call "Minute of Coyote." ):runaway:

The OPP used the Mini14 for a while. They had a model called Mini14 GB - AC556 (I could be wrong) that had a bayonet mount, folding stock and a flash hider. These were MOA guns, as opposed to the rest of the Mini14's and Mini30's which are MO barn door guns.

If I could find one of them marked OPP in minty shape for cheap I'd get it. Unfortunately they sell for way too much money...
