I have been thinking about purchasing either a Ruger stainless mini 30 or a CZ-858 to take advantage of the cheap plinking ammo and maybe a coyote or 2 at moderate range. I will need to mount a scope so was leaning towards the mini 30
any input would be great

if you want to use the military surplus ammo, you should go with the CZ
the ruger mini is not made for the hard military primers and most of the rounds won't go off (unless you modify your gun)

A decent red dot is good out to 100m easily, 200m is doable just need a proper sight. I would recommend the CZ 858 anyday, to anyone. I have the scout mount on mine and is absolutely great. Let me know if you have any questions.

Do you have a mini 30? I have used surplus ammo for years in my Mini 30 with no mods, brought it brand new.

don;t have a mini-30
i have used a friend's mini-30
many rounds didnt go boom. i had no problem using the ammo from the same crate in my sks

Don't have a Mini-30 yet, Do have a Mini-14 and love it.
My CZ seems to have the "Gremlin" but on the plus side it did come with 4 30rd mags which according to the EE, hi cap Mini-30 mags would be $100 each if you could get them.

Yah, that's one advantage about the 858, the mags are much cheaper and readily available.

I have an older Mini30 which did have problems with hard primers with Chinese 7.62X39, however the solution to the problem was to replace hammer spring with a Wolfe extra power Hammer spring which are available from Brownells for Mini's

I own a Mini 30 581 series. I had to install the Wolf hammer spring upgrade in order to shoot the cheap surplus ammo I got from Wholesale sports. I had all sorts of problems with the gun when I first got it, but some emery cloth and dremel work really smoothed things out and now it fires everytime. I love my Mini 30, its definately the funnest gun I currently own.

What did you have to smooth in the action. I want to get a mini thirty also but wondered about some things. How accurate and does the smaller bore bother? Is it reliable? Thanks

If you need to put optics on it, the Ruger will be the easiest and cheapest way WITHOUT modifying your gun to do. The CZ is ergonomically superior. The Ruger stainless will be less of a hassle to clean out but, the CZ is easy to clean but doesn't have a stainless bore/gas system. I have a ruger mini14 in stainless and have owned a CZ. I like them both without preference. You will have more of a bullet choice if you reload for the Ruger due to the .308 bore.
