Ruger Mini 30

its funny how guys on other threads will mock a guy for asking about hunting with an sks with sp rounds yet here are a group of guys that regularily take game with 7.62x39. A co-worker scoffed at me for hunting bear with a sks. Whats the big deal if you stay withing range? the way i see it keep at 75 yards or less(depending on game hunted) and you should be good to go.

That's exactly right Olympia, for black bear or deer at less than 100 yards, and SKS or Mini 30 is fine. The round is similar to a 30-30, and they've taken thousands of deer from the 1800s to the present day. No substitute for practicing your shooting before you hunt, but if you can group your shots consistently into 4" at 100 yards then you're good to go. My dad shot a moose every year from '55 to '75 in northern BC with a stock WW2 surplus .303...he kept his shots to 100 yards or less and no problem.

Irunguns, if the Canadian site is out of stock check the American site
Be patient they can be difficult rifles to find
Grouse river also might have them but the cost is retarded

I still have one on order alongside the Mini 30 I just recently got. They seem to be very far and few between atleast here in Saskatoon? on a side note i bought a couple of more Mini 30 clips and stripped them down and cleaned/oiled them up. Looks like they were in the packaging for awhile, hahaha.

Has anyone fired a lot of surplus ammo in a mini 30? Who stocks mini30 Magazines?

I've tried both Barnaul and the Non corrosive Norinco that Canada Ammo has. The Barnaul fires 90% of the time, with about 10% not firing due to light strikes. The Norinco 7.62x39 is unusable in my Mini, 1 in 10 actually fire and they don't feed nicely, the bolt hangs up, etc. Stick with the Barnaul as far as inexpensive ammo goes. And for magazines, I got mine from Cabela's online, and IRUNGUNS.

I have fired about 500rouds of Norinco ammo (2012 made ), zero of them has problem. The Only problem is magazines, the original 5roud magazine do not work well, you need push bolt forward some times, I bought two 20 pin 5 magazines, they work very well. I am trying to find out the reason and to improve 5 rould magazine, I like it, it's light, short, easy for use.

My new to me Mini 30
Did not like Norc silver box at all
Barnau was about 5% light strikes
Hornady shot great
S&B shot great
PPU shot good

Going to order the heavier hammer spring from Brownells.
See if it helps with the cheap ammo,

I just purchased a 582 series Mini 30 Ranch Rifle last night. It's a real beauty. Haven't stripped it down for its clean and lube but I can't wait to get it to the range.

I've heard it said on occasion that Ruger ships the Mini-30 with a .308" bore so one cannot shot surplus through it and must reload. If anyone has ever wondered about that the following is from Brownells:

Ruger Mini-30 bore specs
This rifle is chambered for the 7.62 x 39mm cartridge. This cartridge, traditionally, uses a projectile with a nominal diameter of .311 to .312 inch.

At the time the Mini-30 was introduced very few bullet makers where producing .311/.312 inch bullets for reloading in the light 125-130 grain weight required. Ruger initiated the use of barrels with a groove dimension of .308 inch and a long tapered throat. The throat allowed the use of ammunition with .311/.312 projectiles by gradually squeezing them to the .308 diameter. In addition, ammunition loaded with more commonly available .308 diameter bullets could also be used.

Commencing in 1992 Ruger initiated a change to using .311/.312 nominal groove diameter, 1-10 inch right hand twist barrels in all Mini-30's. It was likely well into 1993 before all rifles coming of the production line incorporated the .311/.312 barrels
