i'm considering buying my fiancee a new rifle for her birthday, for coyotes and deer, she loves my AR180B i mounted a collapsable M4 style stock (she's really petite) . she enjoys the semi auto and the lack of recoil, what i'm considering is a ruger mini in 6.8SPC, wondering if anyone has any thoughts on it. if not i'll go with a vangaurd youth in 243 or 7mm08, 260 or 6.5 swede

Well the 6.8 would be capable for sure. Find a mini 14 for her to look at and shoulder as well as the other guns. Let her decide. Vanguard and ruger make really short LOP guns that should fit.

i considered the mini 30, i like the idea of 7.62x39 as a medium caliber as she'd most likely only be hunting mulies whitetail and called coyote i'm a believer in heavier bullets, having spent years as a big game guide i prefered seeing a 30-06 shooting 180's than a 257 shooting 115's. since the 105gr is the heaviest 6mm i have found (other than DTAC's) and for resonable energy you need speed with the light 243 bullets thus more recoil, not condusive to confidence or enjoyment (except to us suckers for punishment) now that i've spent a few days thinking about it i'm going with a 6.5 swed or 260 rem shooting a 140gr bullet @ 2700fps moderate recoil easily mitigated with a limb saver pad and great sectional density. personally i use a 338 win shooting a 225 sst @ 2900fps but just got a rem700 in 300 weatherby (sorry bragging i know but i know you guys appreciate this stuff) that i hand load to 3384fps with a 168gr SMK that shoots into 0.303moa LOVE THAT GUN can't wait til november.

I've started to use a Ruger Hawkeye in 6.8spc and love it. I have shoulder and neck troubles, so I am now recoil shy. The wife has a Ruger MKII in 260rem and has never lost a deer yet.

Side note: rumour is Ruger has dropped the Mini in 6.8spc, so if you find one, don't wait. And the Hawkeye 6.8 was dropped after one year.

My dad is 77 years old is in excellent shape but he has a 3rd degree shoulder seperation = he stopped shooting/hunting due to not being able to handle recoil anymore.

Last fall I got him up into the mtns for a day and was able to talk him into shooting my XCR-L in 6.8SPC his first shot was way off @ 150 yards due to the fear he had in smacking his shoulder.

After that shot he turned to me and said I didn't feel any recoil what is this cartridge I'm shooting?

So I told him he was shooting 110gr Sierra Prohunters @ 2650fps and that my 95gr TTSX 2825fps loads were good on deer out to 300 + yards.

I had given him a 10 round pistol mags so he turned back to the target and proceeded to smack the kill zone of a deer with the next 9 shots as fast as he could squeeze the trigger.

Yep the 6.8spc is a great little cartridge when you have th eright bullets loaded... :)

Though i haven't done much more than sight mine in, the Mini-14 6.8 i have is more than deer accurate, and my wife has no issue running 5 through it in a hurry.

What part of the province are you in? I may be able to offer a test drive.
