Ruger Mk III Disassembly Problems

Did you dry fire and then pop the mag out first? And I'm assuming you are doing it unloaded... but for that one dude out there who will scream at me for not making sure... make sure it's unloaded/safe/and so on.

If it's brand new, you're going to have to hit it. I flipped a screwdriver around and smacked it with the handle to get it started and then used a brass punch to "motivate" it the rest of the way through. It loosens up more and more each time you disassemble it.

Try sinking a drop or two of oil into it too perhaps. I've never had to actually 'hit' one, but have had to resort to a slightly beefier tool that my 'standby paperclip' though. Like above mentioned, make sure you're pistol is decocked. Re-assembly is easier than most how-to's describe, so long as you understand where and why the stirrup has to be sitting.

Good point mmattockx, I reread his post and perhaps he's got the lever pulled down and the housing 'out' but hasn't been able to pull it 'down'. I've never had to do anything but swing it out and wiggle, jiggle, and tug. (Someone will read dirty into that) Did seem strange the takedown lever would stick (i must have misunderstood for sure.)

... and you've got the housing swung all the way up/out? If you do and your pistol is anything like mine, you'll have an 1/8" of swing at the end of your MSH. You should see some minor rotation in the vertical pin. If not, its really jammed in there i guess. My pin (the 'stuck' piece) rubs on the left side but not much. That's due to alignment of the insert/frame. Yours must be worse? If you're getting pin rotation you should be able to work it down slowly. Sorry I couldn't help more. Post your final findings I'm curious.

the one on my Ruger is so tight, I used a wooden chopstick as a dowel and a mallet to tap it out.

Ridiculously tight gun, I needed a hard plastic hammer to bonk the upper receiver off the lower.

Get a small plastic mallet from Canadian Tire. The main spring will eventually loosen up but the mallet comes in handy when loosening the barrel and a bunch of other stuff you never thought you needed one for. Also depending on which manual you have there may be an error in it. To reinsert the mainspring housing the mag must be inserted first, otherwise it gets tough and many never clean their MK III again because of that.
By the way watch you don't hit the sight when bashing the mainspring, easy to break.

Do not hammer on the lever while it is pulled down.it will fatigue the lever and cause cracks.how do I know this???
Take a pair of pliers, tape the noses of the pliers with duct tape.grab the lever firmly so as not to slip and pull to the rear(aft.)
