Hi. I just purchased a new MK III target pistol. I had it out at the range today. Att first it was great. A nice gun all. around. It feels great and shoots better. After about 120 shells it had a few feeding issues. I am using Winchester made in USA 22 LR. So the shells are of a good quality. It was only about minus 2, so not too cold. One of the clips worked all of the time. The second one did not. It would fire the first shell, then get stuck on the second or third. When I looked in the gun I could see the shell had not completely left the clip.

I took the gun home and striped it down cleaned and oiled it.

I looked at both clips, they seem to be identical. I could not see any burrs or dents in the one that was giving me problem. The gun was not hot to the touch. These 120 shells were fired over a two hour period.

Any ideas?

Kevin

I have a Ruger MK III Target and was told by guys from my club to stay away from Winchester. It's funny, or local Canadian Tire stocks Winchester, Federal, Remington, and CCI. The CCI is the first to sell, then the Federal, and then the Remington and Winchester usually are left sitting there. All I have ever used are CCI Mini Mag. They are the best to break it in. Then you can stay with them, or once broke in, go to Federal bulk pack or Blazer. I use the CCI Mini Mags and Federal and CCI Tactical Bulk if you can find it. I have never had an FTF or FTE. You should look into the Majestic Arms Speed Strip Kit. It replaces the bolt pin with a threaded one and makes pulling the bolt a breeze. Don't take the barrel of to often. It will wear and become loose over time. That came right from a Ruger Tech. at a gun show.

Winchester Super X by chance? I bought 500 rounds of that stuff believing it to be good... Winchester right? Nope! Garbage!

I had a MKII not even fire 1 round of the stuff... it jams everything else... except my MKIII for some reason but I think thats just luck, my MKIII eats everything.

Likely ammo related, buy a couple boxes of CCI mini-mags and see if the problem persists. Also wouldn't be a bad idea to take your mags apart and give them a cleaning.

What are you lubricating your gun with? You said it was new, did you strip the gun down and clean and relube it before shooting it?

Standard red-boxed American Eagle is what all my guns get fed. It's cheap and is sufficiently small to fit into my tighter match chambered rifles and handguns. Very few FTFs, though the occasional round is oversize and will not fit. I have a Ruger MKII and it gets te same diet of AE that all other guns get, and it runs great.

I have never seen red boxed AE Rimfire in our area, wish I could get it. The only Federal our stores carry is Champion bulk packs. Run good in my Ruger. We do have AE in 9mm and my 9mm's like it, both rn and truncated.

My Mark III will eat everything & anything flawlessly. I have never had any issues with ammo. I usually use Winchester 333/555 bulk packs or Blazer.

I'm going to guess the gun is brand new and not a used ' new to you ' one.

You pretty much isolated the problem in general, it's that one touchy mag. If it were both then the issue could be ammo, mags, cleaning, but in this case it's just that one mag.

It's nice when a new guns works perfect out of the box, but it's also not a guarantee ( which is not a bad thing ). Guns, like cars and bikes need a bit to work themselves in.

I'd start by cleaning the bad mag. Get an old toothbrush and scrub the feed lips well in case there's a bit of grease or grit left over from the factory.

After that just shoot it. It will probably need 200 or so rounds to work itself in. What you'll probably notice after 50 or so is that the feed lips on the bad mag will be loosing finish in a few spots faster than the good mag.

It's tempting to just sand those spots and solve the issue but be patient with it. It will probably solve itself after a few more rounds and then be good for life.

If not, post up a few picks in a week or 2. We'll try to narrow down the diagnosis.

My Mark III eats everything as far as I can remember, but I usually feed it the Winchester M-22 bulk ammo that comes 2 bricks of 500 for about $49.

Hi.
Yes, the Ruger is brand new out of the box.

Yes, it was Winchester Super X. I always liked the Winchester name. I have a model 94 30-30 that I have owned since the 1970s. Great firearm. Never a problem.

Yes, I did strip and clean it after. I did nothing to it before first fireing aside from admireing it.

After cleaning it, I just set both clips back in the case. I will watch for wear patterns on them.

I was at the range again today. This time I used Federal Champions. It worked like a dream. Not even a hick up.

Thank you for the advice.

Good that you had the problem sorted out. I had a chance to shoot my mentor's Ruger Mk III, not a single problem with Federal 525, Winchester 555/525, CCI Blazer, CCI Minimag, CCI SV. Winchester Wildcat sucks. Winchester M22 is also good.

Safe Shooting!

Winchester has had multiple issues with ammunition over the last 5 years - some of the stuff that's being shipped under the White Box program is garbage (literally). It's pretty sad, really but when demand in the US goes up, their quality tanks.
