Ruger MK lll Questions

I have the Mark lll 22/45 target stainless with the slab side barrel.Excellent shooter, very accurate.I have not had any issues with over 1k rnds so far with Fed bulk pack..

The cleaning situation varies with the ammo, I find. My MKII Target model would fire a couple hundred rounds of Winchester Wildcat okay, but then powder residue and the odd lead shaving would build up on the breech face and prevent the bolt from closing completely. It only took a minute or two to clean it out with a toothbrush and some G96.

Stripping the gun down for thorough cleaning isn't that bad after the first couple of times, and not all that necessary as a regular thing. Youtube videos help.

Used Ruger Mark pistols are generally a good deal...they don't wear out or get out of tune. The finish can suffer if it's neglected, but they will keep on shooting fine for hundreds of thousands of rounds.

Try and handle one before you buy. I've used a mark 2 bull barrel on a few occasions and I really didn't like the grips, balance and trigger. There are quite a few different trim levels with different barrel weights and grips that would make a huge difference. I think in the end you would probably want to upgrade the trigger to a volquartsen. For me the mark 3 grips are too narrow and the bull barrel too heavy. I checked them out side by side with a buckmark in wholesale sport and I would have went with the buckmark UDX if I hadn't had a s & w 41 come up used at my gun club.

I would recommend the Mark 2 or 3. I bought my Mark 3 new only because I could not find a used one. I installed a VQ trigger and bushing. It made a great difference in trigger pull, and pre & post trigger travel. I did not like the standard grips and installed a VQ target grip. It made it a wonderful gun to handle and shoot. Mine will shoot all ammo but like Blazer CCI ammo the best although it is impossible to find now. Highly recommend this gun.

Ruger all the way it is the Lego of .22 pistols!

So many suppliers for tuning options at such a reasonable cost and after I looked at a few other makers I found I was unimpressed with the lack of aftermarket support so after 3Rugers I know I made the right choice hands down.

My newest was the poly framed 22/45 Lite with Colt .45 grip panels. Just love the balance and grips of this new model it has the same reliability and reputation of any Ruger but being able to swap out easily avaialble .45 grip panels sealed it.

Everyone I let shoot the 22/45 comments on the balance and comfort of the new frame.

I totally dig my Mk.III Competition Target Model, I have only had it out twice for a good session and it never had a failure of any kind. I was shooting Winchester Wildcat both times.

I just did some minor cleaning after each outing.

Very nice pistol IMO, my wife likes shooting it too.

Good point Randy

If you go for the 22/45 check out the RP ( removable panels) models so you can change out the grips if you want. Some have moulded in grips that aren't changeable. 1911 grips are an awesome feature that would be nice on other makes as well :) there are tons of 1911 grip options available

I clean mine once a year or every few 1000 rounds give or take, Never had any issues.

the Ruger Mk series are one of the best 22lr pistols out there.

I have the mk3 stainless target, had it for a couple years, first time out after about 250 rounds it started missing the sear or something, 3 trigger squeezes for one round fired. I took it home and put it away till I had time to work on it stripped it down , cleaned it and took it to the range, ,same thing right away, stripped it again and couldn't see anything so put it back together and noticed the cross pin that is just above/ behind the grip was in on one side and had slipped from the frame. This caused the trigger group or sear to #### sideways just enough to miss fire. I put the pin back in which seemed a bit loose for the job it does and went to the range. Once again it took about 10 mags before missfiring once again, I looked at the pin and sure enough it had slipped sideways again! I will be emailing ruger to see if they know how to fix this, not sure if the frame was punched too wide or the Pin needs to be peened. When it is working it is fun to shoot and quite accurate!

I too have seen this.

These are based loosely on WWII Japanese design. I was shooting one at a range in florida and fired 200 rounds with only two FTL. Both were on the second round. Range guy says they have had it 2 years and it gets beat on every day. They had nothing but good to say about the Ruger. Most reliable .22 in their cabinet. Stick with HV ammo. Heavy and dead accurate. Great range gun. Buy new. http://www.alflahertys.com/collections/firearms/products/ruger-22-45-target-pistol-22lr-10107 ........for that money why not.
