Hey Everyone,

Decided it was finally time to clean the Mk2 I bought used this past summer and I'm having one helluva time getting it apart, So far the only thing i can do is flip the leaver open, and swing out the main bolt stop plunger/pin assembly, No matter what I can't get that bolt stop pin/plunger out! it'll move around a little bit but will not come out.

Any ideas?! other than busting out the BFH (Big F'in Hammer)

Thanks
Dave

yup, mag out and not cocked, pin will not budge, in all the youtube videos they show you pulling hard and the pin releasing, I'm far from a sissy at 5'8 210lbs but pulling with all my strengh she wont budge, I can see it move up and down but wont come free. The barrel is also loose on the frame if that's a hint for anyone.

The barrel shouldn't be loose in my experience taking apart my mark2 target. Push it back on and then give the bolt stop pin a pull. My first time through I had to persuade it with a soft-faced mallet. We get along now and have worked out an amicable arrangement.

Use a punch and rubber mallet to push the pin through, they are very tight. If you dont have a punch that fits sometimes I've used a pen cap that was very stiff plastic.

My MKIII is stubborn like that too - No way can I just pull it out to disassemble, so, being the resourceful type, I looked around for a useful 'punch' and spotted an electrical wire-nut (those twist-on caps for inside electrical boxes, etc.). Works great as a punch, similar to the pen lid mentioned above. Getting mine back in can be a bit of a bear too, and contrary to popular belief, it has not (yet?) loosened up with age/use. Maybe in a few more decades...

Mine comes apart relatively easily, but it's got about a million rounds through it, and I suspect a lot of take-apart/reassembly cycles. Teacher39 is correct, the barrel shouldn't be loose on the frame at this point, it only comes off after the pin is out and the bolt removed. It's possible the receiver/barrel assembly has shifted slightly and is jamming the pin, which has a cutout area in it.
Does the pin extend slightly above the top of the receiver, or has it dropped down at this point? If it has, you may need to push or tap the barrel back in place to remove the bolt stop, assuming the barrel HAS shifted.
Once you've done this the first time, it really does get easier. Getting the hammer strut in the right place during reassembly is the part most have trouble with, plus squeezing the trigger and holding the gun just right so gravity can do it's thing.

I found a bit of polishing on the pin helped mine.

I'm really surprised that a used MKII is so tight (still).

+2....once you get the pin out polish the "paint" off where it makes contact. Then give the polished pin a light lube. Makes it easy the next time you dis/assemble the Ruger.

The barrel's loose? Doesn't make sense.....

Well I'm at a loss, I think the loose barrel is winning on this one, but i've tried using a rubber mallet to tighten the barrel back onto the frame no luck, and ive tried using a brass punch with a finishing nail hammer to drive the pin out, and no luck. the pin will move up and down maybe an 1/8 of a inch fairly easily with just slight finger pressure but i cant get it to drop below the surface of the barrel. any other suggestions on getting this thing unstuck?

Go to Ruger.com, pistol tech tips, look for a video on disassembly. I like you suffered terribly. The videos I found on YouTube were crap. Watch the videos on Rugers website, problems solved.

I needed a mallet and I used a plastic punch to get mine out the first few times. I polished the pin and I can now remove it by hand with some decent force.

Before you hit the bolt stop pin with the punch/hammer push the back of the bolt forward towards the front of the gun. The pin might be getting hung up on the recoil spring assembly....

Well it's free, and what a doozie, this sums up exactly what happened

The pin walked out and was binding on the frame. a lot of taping the frame and feeling with feeler gauges and it's free. Need to decide if i'm going to replace the pin or just stake the crap out of it. a little damage to the frame from when i was trying to free the bolt stop pin but nothing you can see when it's assembled.

Gosh. The Google-Fu is strong with this one. I'm glad you got it sorted out, I would have used A Bigger Hammer.
