Ruger MkIII Jamming.

Quick question.

My fathers Ruger MkIII is a jam-o-matic. It has been like this since we got it from the factory, and have never gotten around to dealing with it properley.

Many times I have taken the ejector and bolt of this gun totally apart, cleaned, and made sure there is lots of oil, but to no avail.

About once a magazine, the ejector will fail to pull the round completley out of the action. Somtimes the spent cartridge will stovepipe out the side of the gun, and other times the cartridge will not even leave the action, letting the bolt strip a round off the mag and get jammed on the spent cartridge.

I have heard of people getting new extractors for their MKIII's, and I believe this would solve it, but I just want to make sure I am not missing anything a bit more basic before I spend the money.

Thanks,

Kevin.

Similar problems happened to me yesterday. Dont shoot the 22 45 much so i forget the problems i've had until the next time. Stange thing is when I first got it there were no problems. Yesterday I used Winchester 22 target ammo, some went off definately not full charge so I can understand those not ejecting. I am interested in any input on this.

Try high velocity ammo with bullet weight at least 40 gr, it doesn't seem your gun has problem. These semi gun was designed for high velocity ammo, anyway some gun just more picky than the others.

I belive that is the true problem. Many threads ago this was discussed, and some of the people found a big difference in the ammo choise.

Make sure when you oil the gun you get any on or around the extractor. I gave my self that problem with my beretta. If theres even the slightest bit of oil on it, the extractor will tend to have powder residue build up on it very quickly and can actually slip right off the rim of the case.

i have the same problem with my mark 1 there is a a little slide up from the mag that directs the bullet into the chamber which the nose of the bullet gets stuck on the pointy edge preventing the bullets from loading into the chamber

I run Federal 525 pack ammo in my 22/45 and my Mk.II before I sold it and they never had an issue. Winchester Xpert were terrible and Dynapoint GT's are not bad, but would have a FTE or FTF once every 40-50 rounds.

Keep shooting it!!!

Mine was a jammer too, but after firing 700 rds through it, it seemed to fix itself. I also found that on 2 of my mags, rounding the front edge of the rear lips helped too. I have 5 mags, and this seemed to help them as they were the ones jamming up the most. Check out Rimfirecentral as well, lots of info there.:50cal:

Not the same problem, Kevin's is failing to extract.. your's is failing to feed.
Check to be sure there are no burr's on the edge of the feed ramp and a quick polish job will help also. You should try different brands of ammo as well.

X2 here with my 22/45 also.
It will eat the Federal 525 stuff all day, ran about 300 rounds through it today and the only failures were two bad primers. Both fired on the second attempt.
Put a brick of American Eagle through it and had alot of problems with ftf, fte, and many bad primers.

Mine would not extract well either and had as many as 2 failures per clip with any brand of ammo. I changed out the extractor a few weeks ago and on the last range trip I put close to 400 rounds through it and no failures. It fixed mine and was a cheap fix.

OP, if it is the extractor giving you trouble, a Volquartsen extractor is only $12 with free shipping from Rimfire Sports and should solve those issues for you.

Got the extractor in the mail.

I will give you guys some results when I get it.

I know their 10/22 extractor made a huge difference to the reliability of my 10/22, so lets hope it does the same for the MK III

I had the same problem with my markIII when it was new. I found standard velocity ammo worked the best federals or CCI. After a few thousand rounds it seems to work flawless. Last time I tried high velocity federal bulk it worked good. I think the problem fixes itself after a good brake in...

I have a 22/45 "III", I remove the mag-safety, install the volq extractor and remove the loaded chamber indicator. It's super reliable... as in never had a failure in 1000rnds reliable. :)

Im shooting American Eagle 40gr solids (value pack).

I just bought a MKIII and hate the mag safety! How did you remove it?

It's just a mechanical lever under spring tension located between the hammer and the disconnect. You can just remove it; I'm a little anal, so I replaced it with a small washer the same width as the safety.

Trigger improves A-LOT by doing this. Another bonus is that disassembly is easier once done due to the fact that you no longer need to do the mag insert and removal as part of the step.

Good luck! :)
