Ruger MKIII & MKII Pistol

I have the Mk III. It's durable, cheap, and accurate. The only other entry level .22 pistol I would suggest/recommend would be the Buck Mark.

They are great pistols. Only bad thing is disassembling/reassembling, but once you learn the tricks it gets easier. That and loading the magazines sucks (hurts the thumb), but there is a cheap mag loader that allows you to load a magazine in a few seconds and causes no pain. Once you get past these two minor issues they are great. Works well with pretty much anything you feed it.

My MKIII has been fine, finding mags is not as easy at the moment as the MKII. Lever Arms may still have a few. I've heard different opinions as to whether MKII mags will/will not work in a MKIII (and whether or not removing the magazine disconnect will permit MKII mags to be used in a MKIII).

I've used a Ruger Mk I .22 Pistol for 40 years. Magazines are still available. Once you get past the mag loading issue (amazing what $4 of plastic can fix) and learn to break it down without problems, it's cheap, reliable, accurate and rugged. If I stumbled on a Browning Medalist, I might get another .22 pistol. Until then, I'm completely satisfied.

to me it's the best rimfire pistol. swallows any ammo, far from being a jam-o-matic like some other .22 pistols brands who are very ammo sensitive, quite easy to field strip once you figured out the needle spring thing on reassembly. solid as tanks like all rugers.

I've a Mk.1 that is scarily accurate at 50m: 10/10 on an 8.5X11" piece of paper. I'll never sell this pistol.
The Ultimate Cliploader device works great!

Mags are readily available from brownells. Cheap too. I just got a few a couple weeks ago. $22ish?

Love mine. It is my second one and wouldn't consider anything else. I have never heard of or had a "mag issue" so I'm not sure what that is about. I hold the mag in my left hand like a pocket knife, slide the button thing with my thumb and load up. It is really quite simple unless you have no thumb. I can't imagine how people can have difficulty with this. I have seen gizmos designed to assist with holding the slider down but unless you are missing your thumbs, I really don't get the purpose. And yes, I have loaded 500 rounds without getting a sore thumb...

I agree, I've always slid the follower down by thumbing the nub on the follower out the side of the mag down as you mention. Fired 500 in a day a few times and no sore thumbs.

As for the pistol, best rimfire automatic made, have a pair of stainless Mark II's and have owned several others previously. The Mark II is the best of the three, has the last shot hold open, but none of the safety junk (loaded chamber indicator, magazine disconnect), the less crap in the receiver the better. I do like the MkIII mag release however, and ordered a VQ target grip frame to allow use of MkIII mags with my Mark II receivers. I wouldn't turn my nose up at a MkIII, great gun, I just prefer less nonsense. The safety nonsense is probably worth dealing with given the better mag release if you don't want to build a $1,000 Mark II like I have with the VQ frame to take MkIII mags.

I like my MkII bull barrel quite a lot.

I picked up a mag loading gadget at a recent gun show for $3...it does make loading more comfortable, but is hardly necessary. Mec-Gar makes mags for the MKII...find a dealer or distributor and you can order as many as you like. Brownells is a good option too...they're in stock right now for $18.99.
