Ruger New Model Single Six - .17 hmr or .22?

I'm thinking about getting a Ruger New Model Single Six. I'm debating between the good ol' blued or the convertible, of course the blued being in .17 hmr and the convertible being a .22

What's the way to go here? I've been reading and it seems like the .17 hmr is a great round, but when I was looking for a small caliber I always had .22 in mind.

I already own a New Vaquero in .45 LC, just looking some a single-action in something smaller.
 
My old man has a .22 single six. One cylinder for short, long, and long rifle, and one for 22 mag. It's a pretty neat little gun, accurate, and very fun to shoot. Shoots well with all kinds of ammo. I was thinking of getting one in .17 as well, and i've heard that they come in a 2 cylinder model for .17hmr and .17hm2. If you could get a combo in .17 that would be cool, and i'd go with that. If it just comes with the one cylinder, then i'd go with the .22
 
IMHO, go with the .22 convertible.

A big reason to go with a rimfire is they are cheap to shoot. 17hmr takes away a lot of that advantage.

Besides, then you get a .22 mag cylinder to play with, if you want to shoot something with more oomph.

Just my 0.02 cents.
 
If you lived a few hours south, I'd be all for the 17 HMR single six, for squirrels or other similar size game. But here in Canuckistan, the only advatage of 17HMR in a single six, is you get to pay more for ammo that is harder to find, has substantially less selection and makes smaller holes. If you just happen to LOVE 17 HMR, then by all means, indulge yourself, otherwise I don't see a lot to recommend over the 22 convertible (which I own and LOVE).
 
I Love my SS Single Six in .22 cal. One of my boys likes to shoot shorts (almost like a BB gun then) and my other dude like the mags. With the price and availability of long rifle it's easy to feed it super cheap. I couldn't see paying for the .17 ammo (when I find it out here), but if you were really, really interested in it then that would dictate.
 
Sounds good. All these posts are more or less just reiterating how I felt in the first place. I just wanted to make sure that I was wasn't missing something.
 
I was checking out .17HMR on Saturday and it was $15.00 per 50 Rnds as compared to $2.30 per 50 for .22LR that is more than 6 times as much.........:eek:

Yes it is restricted, legal in Canada but not many store sell them, the stainless steel one is kick ass. I have seen two sell in our local store but they were sold before I have the green ready. I bought a mini master instead.

The bearcat does look cool. I'm just worried for accuracy. From what I'm reading it's not as accurate as the single six - and really I'm look at this as a .22 target single action.

Anyone with a bearcat able to chime in?
