Ruger no 1 in 44mag

That is awesome... hopefully Prophet River will get some with nice wood... I sold off all of my .44's, but I would be in for that one.

Curious Hoyt, what kind of velocities, energy, drop would you have from a 44 mag fired from a 20" rifle barrel? What kind of effective range would it have as well and on what species would it be effective? I know nothing of handguns but I do believe that is originally a handgun round is it not?

.44 mag was designed as a handgun cartridge initially, but in a rifle or carbine makes a great hunting, plinking or SASS competition cartridge. If I could only have one rifle, I'd go with a .44 mag lever action because of its versatility and effectiveness on game.

Depending on the powder used, it CAN add upwards of 400 fps over a 6" revolver velocity. In my 24" barreled .44 mag, I get around 1900 fps with a 265 grain jsp's and a full load of win 296/h110. Personally, I have no trouble using it for deer, black bear, and even moose if a good shot presented itself. Effective range for my loads is about 100 yards, maybe 125 on deer with a rest. In addition to big game, it's effective on small game with a cast lead bullet, it takes the head off a grouse, squirrel or rabbit easily. That's my experience and opinion, results may vary.

My light cowboy loads I shoot gain between 200-300 fps in a 20" barrel depending if I use clays or tightgroup with a 200 grain rnfp.

Hornady's .44 Leverevolution measures 1870 fps at the muzzle of a 20" barrel. Trajectory over 100 yards starts to look a little like a rainbow. For more info see: http://www.hornady.com/store/44-mag-225-gr-ftx-leverevolution/
The .44 is a great round in a rifle - Moderate recoil, not too loud, can shoot it at most indoor ranges. I've taken 3 deer with mine, all Bang Flops, complete pass thrus. Its terminal effectiveness cannot be measured in FPS or Energy; The .44 entry hole is 50% bigger than a 30 cal, the exit hole twice the size, and the weight of the bullet is substantially more. I can't imagine using anything else for deer hunting for ranges less than 100 yards. I have a Ruger 77/44, a ruger .44 carbine, and a chiappa Alaskan in .44. In the past I've owned a Rossi single shot .44 (which was scary accurate), a winchester 94AE .44 (beautiful!). And the Ruger No 1 sounds like a fantastic gun, just not sure about the price considering I already have a few .44s.

My experiences with the .44 RM echo those above... I have used Marlin 1894's, Win 94's, Ruger 77/44's and H&R Handi rifles. My preferred load of 225 FTX over H110 is a peppy and accurate load that I would use out to 150 yards on deer without any concern that the job would be done cleanly.

This would be a great rifle, Iam currently working a lot with a 44 mag handi rifle with a 22 inch barrel, it's a killer with 300 grain hard cast but if one was so inclined the Ruger could be easily reemed to .444

Here are a couple .44 Handi rifles that I made up, the first is a swap barrel set in .44 & .30/30;

I have a lever action Winchester in 44mag, and can confirm all the above. If you want, need a hard hitting short range cartridge, this is it. I have mine sighted in at 100m

Great bush/bear/elk for shorter ranges.

Bang Flop is a reality :) Low recoil and relatively cheap to shoot.

It would be nice to have a No.1 in .44 magnum, but I'd be most interested to see how it stacks up in accuracy to the Remington 788 which was the most accurate .44 I've ever owned. I shot a witnessed 1 3/8" three shot group at 200 yds. from the bench with my one in '83 using factory Rem. 240 gr. SP ammo.

I also won a 200 yd. off-hand gong shoot with that rifle the same year during a snow flurry at the meat shoot on gongs in order of 12",10",8",6" & 4" using my handloads.

I'd be scooping one of the Rugers, but I'm having too much fun playing with my latest .458 Win. Mag.:runaway:

I kinda like the idea of bigger pistol cartridges in rifles. I have had 2 44mag rifles, one a #3 the other a 77/44. The #3 was one of the most inaccurate rifles I have owned, the 77/44 took a bit to figure out but was fairly accurate when I finally figured it out and tweaked a few things. I believe the #3 had a 1-38" twist and the 77/44 a 1-20" .

Rem 788 .44 mag my buddy has plugs bullets in the same hole at 100 yards........NFS though.....Harold

I'm not sure why I would want a #1 in 44 Mag. I like the #1 nd I like the .44 Mag but I'm not sure that I would enjoy the combination. Deerfield - yes. 73 Winchester - Yes. 77/44 - yes. But for some reason the #1 in 44 doesn't excite me.

I love the 77/44, but the magazine is so limiting... which is why I want a No.1... plus I like rimmed cartridges in the No.1... working on a .30/30, .44, .45/70 set for fun in the deer woods... long COL on spire point bullets makes them more interesting.
