Ruger no 1 in 44mag

If Elmer thought it was a good deer (and more) round I think it's safe to say it is Brad; we all know he had a penchant for overkill

There is no need to "seat way out" the bullets are designed for a revolvers cylinder anyways.

Not to threadjack but the 500 Handi is all that and a bag of chips. I can't wait to play more with mine when I have some days off. Especially when we consider that heavy bullet weights in the .44 are low to mid range in the 500.

A ruger no. 1 in that caliber would be most excellent.

I often find myself pining for one of those Big Horn Armory lever action .500 S and W's. But I just can't justify the price of importing one, and the extra cost for brass and reloading supplies, at least not over a .45-70. If my resources were less limited I think it'd be the cats ass.

Not to hijack, but by means of comparison, what do your loads for your .500 Hand rifle look like? Bullet weight, velocity, energy and recoil - wise?

I don't have a chronograph; but I load to listed velocities for a 10 inch barrel and have 22 inches on the handi rifle. I assume this affects velocity and some sights on the web seem to confirm that.

I use max loads... I trust the rifles ability to handle them I guess.

350s are listed at 1877 I am using xtp magnums. I am kind of curious how these would work on game.

400 grain woodleighs at 1721. These have flat tips with almost half an inch of exposed lead. I think they would be pretty effective; so I am going to sight them in for a backup deer/elk load for this fall.

Recoil is stiff; I don't have a comparison to a .44 mag rifle but it kicks a lot more than the 454 casull in a similar weighted rifle. Feels sort of like a 45/70 which makes sense more pleasant to shoot than my .338.

You could safely say the bullets would be going 300-400 fps faster with the 12 inches of extra tube and an enclosed chamber, very potent stuff indeed. It brings to mind the perfomance of the .50-140 rifle cartridge. Thanks for the info!!! Now I'm pining again.....
